Compass Group USA Inc., doing business as Canteen, owns and operates vending machines across the country.

Canteen has been accused by users of charging more than the displayed item price when using a credit or debit card to purchase.

Plaintiffs allege that Canteen charged customers more than the displayed price for items without informing them.

Canteen has agreed to pay out $6.94 million to settle the claims against it, but has not admitted to any wrongdoing.

The settlement benefits those who made a purchase from a Compass Group USA vending machine between 2014 and July 9, 2025.

This only applies to those who paid with a debit, credit or prepaid card and were charged more than the price listed.

The vending machines at fault are located in several states in the US, including:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Iowa
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • Missouri
  • North Carolina
  • Nebraska
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • Wisconsin
  • West Virginia

HOW MUCH WILL YOU BE PAID?

Under the terms of the settlement, those eligible for compensation will receive a one-time cash payment.

Depending on the number of claimants and funds available, class members can receive between $30 and $360.

This will be based on the number of purchases you made.

The more eligible claims there are, the less money each individual is likely to receive.

This is because the settlement pot will need to be divided between more people.

You will not be asked to provide proof that you were overcharged for a vending machine product.

What's a class-action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or 'classes,' a way to band together in court.

These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.

When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.

Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.

These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.

However, you may be asked to provide additional information at a later date.

WHAT DATES YOU NEED TO KNOW

If you do not submit a claim form by the set deadline you will not be considered for a cash payment.

Also note, if you knowingly submit a fraudulent claim, you will be harming those who are eligible to receive reimbursement.

The claim form deadline is set for November 14, 2025, and the deadline to opt out of or object to the settlement is October 17, 2025.

The final hearing for the vending machine class action comes early next year, on January 9.
