Highly contagious disease spreading in daycare across US with fears it can turn fatal – symptoms to watch for

PARENTS have been warned to keep an eye out for a potentially fatal disease that’s cropping up in daycares across the US.

The sickness mainly affects children under five and can have some terrifying symptoms.

Public health officials have announced that hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) has been detected in daycares.

Earlier this year, there were six outbreaks in Virginia, according to an alert published by the Fairfax County Health District.

And a massive 189 cases have been confirmed in St Thomas, including one possible infection that proved fatal, the US Virgin Islands Department of Health said.

The disease isn’t just affecting children either.

Though it’s more dangerous in young kids, more cases have been seen in adults, which have left patients with rashes and nail loss, medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel told Fox News.

HFMD cases peak in the summer, so parents should know what to look for, especially if their children are surrounded by other toddlers.

Most kids who catch the disease develop a fever, sore throat, painful mouth sores that blister, and a rash on the hands and feet, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The illness is usually harmless, and most children will recover from mild symptoms after seven to ten days.

However, it is highly contagious.

Other kids can get HFMD from droplets that spread from sneezing, coughing, or talking, or from surfaces that have the virus on them.

Fluid from blisters and poop can also carry the nasty sickness.

PREVENTING INFECTION

To prevent children from catching HFMD, parents should try their best to keep their kids away from anyone who is infected.

It’s important to wash hands often, especially after using the restroom, sneezing, or changing a diaper.

If a kid has blisters, parents should help keep them clean and wash their child’s face.

What is hand, foot, and mouth disease?

HAND, foot, and mouth disease is a mild illness that is caused by viruses.

The disease is most often seen in children under five.

Common symptoms of the illness are sores in the mouth and a rash on the hands and feet.

Most children will recover after seven to ten days with over-the-counter pain medicines.

HFMD is highly contagious. Droplets, open sores, and poop can all carry the viruses.

To prevent infection, children should wash their hands often and stay away from people who are sick.

Caregivers should also try not to hug or kiss children who are infected.

People suffering from HFMD should be kept at home and take over-the-counter pain medications.

Because they might have sores in their mouths, it’s important to try and force children to drink water so they aren’t dehydrated.

There aren’t any vaccines to prevent against HFMD.

One health expert said that a commonly used item can transfer HFMD.

NFL star makes second shock return to league just weeks after suspension from high school coaching role

AN NFL veteran has shockingly come out of retirement for the second time.

After retiring from the NFL in 2023 to pursue coaching, Teddy Bridgewater has returned to the league twice.

In 2023, Bridgewater served as the backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions.

However, following that season he left the league to become a high school football coach at Miami Northwestern.

He immediately won a state championship in his first season as a coach before getting the call back into the NFL.

Bridgewater rejoined the Lions to serve as their backup in the NFL playoffs.

He completed one pass attempt in the team’s divisional round loss to the Washington Commanders.

It appeared set that Bridgewater would return to coaching in 2025, but he pulled a 180 and has signed a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The move is to bolster a quarterback room that is particularly weak behind starter Baker Mayfield.

General Manager Jason Licht confirmed the signing of Bridgewater on Tuesday.

“A few years ago he was what was behind ‘Door No. 2,'” Licht said.

“We talked about that today on the sidelines. So we ended up with Tom Brady, but now we have Teddy on the roster, so you can’t have everything at once.

“You can have everything, just not all at once.”

Bridgewater was out on the practice field on Tuesday, and head coach Todd Bowles was already impressed with him.

“He brings us a wealth of experience at that spot,” Bowles said.

“Obviously, we don’t have it. Kyle [Trask] has been here a few years, but he hasn’t really played.

“Obviously, we have the new guy (Connor Bazelak) just coming in. So, we need the extra arm.

NFL important dates 2025 season

March 12 - Free Agency begins

April 24-26 – NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin

September 4 – 2025 season opener (TBC vs Eagles)

November 27 – Thanksgiving Day triple header

January 4, 2026 – End of regular-season

February 8, 2026 – Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California

“We think we need some experience in that room – the more experience, the better.”

Right now, Kyle Trask is set to be the Buccaneers backup quarterback, but anything is possible after preseason games, according to Licht.

“We still have preseason games to play and all that, but right now Kyle is our backup,” Licht said.

“That’s the intention and that’s what we’re hoping for. But yeah, everybody’s competing.”

Bridgewater has played 10 seasons in the NFL, splitting his time between the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, and Lions.
