Fifa makes final decision over World Cup 2026 match locations after controversial Donald Trump remarks

FIFA insist World Cup match locations will not be moved next year following remarks from President Donald Trump.

The White House chief had previously threatened to move World Cup games from cities deemed too “dangerous” amid his crackdown on violent crime.

President Trump has sent the National Guard to crack down on crime in several Democrat-led areas.

And he had a robust response when asked whether host cities like Seattle and San Francisco, whose mayors have clashed with him over policies, would be allowed to hold matches.

Trump said: “That’s an interesting question, but we’re going to make sure they’re safe.

“They’re run by radical left lunatics who don’t know what they’re doing.”

But now, Trump’s plans to move matches have been shot down by Fifa.

Speaking at Leaders Week London, vice-president Victor Montagliani insisted his organisation has all the power when it comes to deciding World Cup venues.

That’s despite President Trump enjoying a strong friendship with his boss, Fifa president Gianni Infantino.

Montagliani said: “It’s Fifa’s tournament, Fifa’s jurisdiction, Fifa makes those decisions.

“With all due respect to current world leaders, football is bigger than them.

“Football will survive their regime and their government and their slogans.”

Seattle and San Francisco are just two host cities in the US set to welcome fans for matches.

Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, LA, Kansas City, Miami, New York and Philadelphia will also hold games next summer.

Canada and Mexico are also set to joint-host the tournament with the US.

President Trump’s administration has already allocated hundreds of millions for security following last summer’s Club World Cup.

He said: “As you probably know, we (the National Guard) are going into Memphis and we’re going into some other cities.

“Very soon we’re going into Chicago. It will be safe for the World Cup. If I think it isn’t safe, we’ll move into a different city, absolutely. It’s actually a very fair question.

“If I think it’s not safe, we’re going to move it out of that city.

“So if any city we think is going to be even a little bit dangerous for the World Cup, or for the (2028) Olympics, you know where they have Olympic overthrow right, but for the World Cup in particular, because they’re playing in so many cities, we won’t allow it.

“We’ll move it around a little bit. But I hope that’s not going to happen.”

Todd McShay finally reveals all over bust-up with ESPN star Paul Finebaum – ‘I think the guy’s a rat’

TODD McShay has broken his silence regarding his troubled relationship with Paul Finebaum.

The pair have been embroiled in a feud since before the 2023 NFL Draft.

McShay, 48 has finally addressed why he holds such distain for his former ESPN colleague.

He was let go by ESPN in June 2023 as the company announced several lay-offs.

Speaking on his eponymous podcast The McShay Show, the analyst explained his stance on the uncomfortable situation.

He claims that the now-24-year-old Jalen Carter’s legal troubles was at the center of his falling out with Finebaum, 40.

“When I say he’s an all-time coward, that’s why I say it,” McShay said. When I say he has no loyalty, that’s why I say it. The guy’s a rat. He’s perfect to be a politician.

“I respected what he did. They brought him in because he’s got an audience down in the south, and people either love him or hate him.”

This comes as Finebaum departs ESPN for a career in politics.

McShay continued to appear as a guest on The Paul Finebaum Show until their relationship reached a breaking point.

His reporting on Carter caused a rift between the pair that is yet to be resolved.

The analyst worked for ESPN with a particular focus on the NFL Draft and spotting the best college players.

That was until McShay highlighted several character concerns about Carter on ESPN just months before the 2023 NFL Draft.

McShay has argued that Finebaum refused to report objectively on Carter being charged after a fatal car crash in January 2023.

Carter was sentenced to 12 months of probation, a $1,000 fine and 80 hours of community service.

The families of those killed in the accident have also filed lawsuits against the Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle.

Truth behind big price tag changes already hitting Walmart, Whole Foods and Kroger

DIGITAL shelf tags are replacing traditional paper tags in grocery stores across the US, and shoppers are being urged to take caution.

The tags, also known as electronic shelf labels, are increasingly being used at popular chains including Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh and Walmart.

The argument heated up between lawmakers and one of America’s largest supermarket chains Kroger[/caption]

The technology means big brands can change the price of an item in an instant, and some experts fear they can be exploited to allow companies to raise prices during periods of high demands.

Walmart has been testing digital shelf labels since early 2019, and now plans to add the technology to 2,300 US stores by the end of this year.

The retail giant sells over 120,000 products on shelves, each with an individual price tag meaning price changes for retail staff could take days.

But experts and lawmakers worry the change can lead to “dynamic pricing”, which is a business strategy where companies set flexible prices that change in real time based on demand and supply.

In response, supermarkets have long argued that the technology allows them to better manage inventory and frees up staff to spend more time assisting customers rather than on menial tasks like changing paper pricing labels.

FIGHT BACK

The argument heated up between lawmakers and one of America’s largest supermarket chains Kroger.

In a letter sent to Kroger’s then-chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen, Senator Elizabeth Warren and then-Senator Bob Casey expressed fear the supermarket was using them to “extract maximum profits”.

“Digital price tags may enable Kroger and other grocery chains to transition to ‘dynamic pricing,’ in which the price of basic household goods could surge based on the time of day, the weather, or other transitory events — allowing stores to calibrate price increases to extract maximum profits,” they wrote.

In response, Kroger said it had never engaged in “surge pricing”.

“[The labels] provide us with operational data to better manage inventory,” Kroger said.

“Those insights allow us to pinpoint opportunities where we can lower prices on items that are perishable, seasonally specific or which otherwise need to move more quickly, including key staples.”

Some shoppers have criticized the technology claiming it will leave them paying more.

Walmart shoppers recently attacked the rollout of the technology, claiming the tags were not installed properly, and that they were “falling off the shelves”.

What is dynamic pricing?

Dynamic pricing is the practice of changing the price for a product or service to reflect changing market conditions.

This usually consists of increasing prices at a time of greater demand.

Some people refer to it as “surge pricing.”

You may have paid for surge pricing while using a rideshare app. Fares often increase during busy times when more people are looking for rides.

In February, Wendy’s CEO announced the restaurant would test out the practice.

“We said these menu boards would give us more flexibility to change the display of featured items,” an official statement on Wendy’s website reads.

“This was misconstrued in some media reports as an intent to raise prices when demand is highest at our restaurants.”

“We have no plans to do that and would not raise prices when our customers are visiting us most. Any features we may test in the future would be designed to benefit our customers and restaurant crew members,” they further denied any future of surge pricing.

They said: “Hopefully yours are installed correctly because about half of ours are just laid in the tracks and don’t have guards on them to keep them in place.

Retail expert Ioannis Stamatopoulos, an associate professor at the University of Texas in Austin, told CNBC that “the facts show there is no surge pricing currently occurring”.

“The basic economics of grocery retail is that they want to acquire customers and retain customers,” Stamatopoulos said.

“It’s silly of them to risk upsetting you over gaining a few extra cents on an ice cream when it’s hot outside.”
