Fury as ultra-lux £500m megayacht ‘A’ seized from Putin pal oligarch is costing city council £30K-A-DAY to keep afloat

A £500MILLION megayacht seized from one of Putin’s oligarch pals has sparked fury with its eye-watering upkeep costs.

The ultra-luxurious boat, known simply as “A”, is reportedly draining a whopping £30,000 from the Italian city of Trieste while docked in its port.

Colossal “A” has been anchored in Trieste for more than three years now, after it was seized from Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko in March 2022.

Mayor Roberto Dipiazza slammed the cost of keeping it seaworthy – around £24million so far.

This dwarfs the budget allocated to other areas of the city – such as the city’s famous tram network which receives around £750,000 a year.

Dipiazza has grown sick of piddling away the pounds and last month demanded to know who will ultimately foot the bill.

“A” needs constant security, a skeleton crew, insurance and fuel, on top of the mooring costs, which is where the money goes.

It has technically been “frozen“, rather than confiscated, meaning it must be returned in the same condition if sanctions are lifted or overturned by a court.

The yacht, launched in 2017, boasts the height of luxury.

Its three masts are taller than Big Ben’s tower, and the boat is so large it is categorised as a medium-sized cargo ship.

It has eight decks, a helicopter pad, an underwater observation room and a hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system.

Run by a crew of 54, the yacht also has a digital control system that allows them to raise and lowers the sails and anchor just by swiping.

And it has the power to dash across waves at speeds of up to 20.8 knots (24mph).

The one-of-a-kind yacht was built by German Naval Yards, in Nobiskrug.

Police cars with flashing lights swarmed the yacht and boarded it before impounding the vessel in 2022, seizing it from Melnichenko.

He is one of Russia’s wealthiest men and presides over an estimated fortune of more than $15billion, built on his fertilizer and coal empire.

The oligarch made headlines when he moored his other £240 million trophy, “Motor Yacht A”, on London’s River Thames near Tower Bridge in 2017.

The tycoon was one of 37 businessmen who met with Putin after the invasion of Ukraine to discuss potential sanctions.

An EU document described him as belonging “to the most influential circle of Russian businesspeople with close connections to the Russian government”, according to the Guardian.

It went on: “He is therefore involved in economic sectors providing a substantial source of revenue to the government of the Russian Federation, which is responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilisation of Ukraine.”

Both his companies – EuroChem Group and SUEK – said Melnichenko had resigned just days before his yacht was seized in 2022.

A spokesperson for Melnichenko at the time said the businessman had “no relation to the tragic events in Ukraine. He has no political affiliations.”

Netflix axes popular dating show spin off after two seasons on air

NETFLIX has axed a popular dating show spin-off after two seasons on air.

The streaming giant has a big catalogue of dating shows; from Love is Blind to Perfect Match.

The Ultimatum: Queer Love will not return for a third season

But one show that will not be returning for a third series is The Ultimatum: Queer Love.

The programme was a spin-off of The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On, which has had four seasons so far.

It followed a group of women and non-binary people who view marriage as a deal breaker in a relationship.

However, one partner is ready to stand at the altar, while the other is dragging their feet over tying the knot.

It prompts one of the people in the couple to – you guessed it – issue an ultimatum; stay together and get married or go their separate ways after the show’s experiment concludes.

During the eight-weeks on the show, the couples separate and date other people while the consider what is best for themselves long term.

The new pairs then enter a trial marriage with a person from one of the other couples and then when the eight weeks have concluded, they have to choose between three futures.

They are: Go back to their original partner and pursue marriage, stay with their new partner or leave the experiment alone.

The second series premiered in June and the show was hosted by Sweet Magnolias’ JoAnna Garcia Swisher.

Meanwhile, the original series continues to grow, with it being franchised into France and South Africa.

In other Netflix dating show drama this week, two Love is Blind contestants were abruptly cut from the current series without explanation.

Season nine of the hit show is currently airing, but fans got a shock this week when Anna, 28, and Blake, 34, suddenly disappeared despite their “engaging” storylines.

The pair got close straight away, and were chatting to each other but also connecting with other people.

Anna also got close to Patrick, but ultimately stood him up on their date when she suddenly left the show.

The pair both went to explain their reasons for leaving with Tudum.

Fans were left stunned at how youthful she appears ahead of her 54th birthday.

Gwen oozed confidence as she posed up a storm on Instagram, with her bold fashion line once again pushing the boundaries of edgy glam.

Her black bra took centre stage as she layered it under a sheer mesh long-sleeve top, finished with a sparkling shimmer.

She completed the look with matching sunglasses adorned with sparkling details, adding an extra touch of glam to the already dazzling outfit.

Her signature blonde locks were pulled up into a slick high ponytail, cascading down in glamorous waves.

The polished hairstyle added to her youthful glow and high-fashion edge.

Her smooth, glowing skin looked flawless and radiant.

A touch of glossy pink lip added the perfect pop to finish off the look.

The daring look showed off Gwen’s fearless fashion sense – and fans couldn’t get enough.

Flooding the comment section with admiration, one wrote: “You got Style.”

Another added: “WOWZEEEE!!!! Gwen… gorgeous as always.”

A third penned: “There’s cool and there’s Gwen Stefani iconic cool!!”

A fourth said: “Insane!”

A fifth commented: “Stunning.”

A sixth gushed: “There’s really nothing she can’t do.”

FASHIONISTA

Gwen launched her fashion line L.A.M.B. back in 2003, with its first runway show hitting in 2004.

The edgy brand mixed everything from Jamaican and Japanese vibes to Guatemalan flair.

What started as a full-on empire of clothes, shoes, bags and even fragrances has since slimmed down to focus mainly on eyewear.

Gwen’s admitted juggling music, motherhood and fashion meant she had to rein things in – but the label’s legacy lives on, with her standout shades still turning heads.

MUSIC LEGEND

The Grammy-winning superstar is still going strong as she marks her 56th birthday today (October 3) – with more than three decades in the music biz under her belt.

Best known for fronting iconic band No Doubt before smashing the charts with solo hits like Hollaback Girl, Luxurious and The Sweet Escape, Gwen hasn’t slowed down since her debut single What You Waiting For? dropped just after her 35th birthday.

The singer, style icon and former Voice coach bagged a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, and has kept busy with everything from film roles, a fashion and makeup empire, raising her kids, to tying the knot with country star Blake Shelton.

Her brother Eric first introduced her to 2 Tone music, and the pair even launched a band called Applecore before forming No Doubt in 1986.

After tragedy struck with the death of their original frontman John Spence, Gwen stepped up as lead singer – and the rest is history.

Since then, she’s released five solo albums, with her latest, Bouquet, arriving in 2024, proving she’s still at the top of her game.
