B&Q’s selling a gorgeous summer plant that needs no watering – it blooms all summer & stops cats pooing in your garden

IN the UK, cats are free to roam, and they are said to travel several miles a day when out and about.

Whether it be strolling the streets or visiting your garden to do their business, and if it’s the latter you’re struggling with then there’s a plant or two that can help.

Lemon balm plant.

The Melissa Officinalis Lemon Balm pictured is sold at B&Q[/caption]

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and lemon thyme (Thymus citriodorus) are known to ward off felines.

Lemon balm is a relatively easy herb to grow, thriving in various conditions.

With antiviral and antibacterial properties, the leaves of this bushy, perennial herb release a strong lemon fragrance when they are bruised.

It prefers full sun or partial shade with well-drained, moist soil, and can grow quickly, dominating free space.

It’s a perennial which means it returns every year with its deliciously lemon-scented leaves, and produces creamy-white or pale purple flowers in summer which honey bees love.

It can also be used around the house and in cooking – the leaves give a lemony kick to salads, sauces and fish dishes, make a refreshing herb tea, and can be added to summer drinks like Pimms.

The crushed leaves are also said to help keep mosquitoes at bay when they are rubbed onto the skin.

As for deterring cats, the citrus scent and texture of lemon balm are off-putting to cats.

You can plant it in pots around the perimeter of your garden or in areas where cats are likely to visit.

B&Q sells Lemon Balm in a 9cm pot for £13.99.

Lemon thyme is a hardy plant that thrives in a range of conditions, so it is a practical choice for gardeners who are looking for natural ways to keep cats out of their gardens and want a plant that will last for years.

It produces small, tubular flowers in shades of pink or pale lilac, typically appearing in whorls at the stem tips in early to mid-summer.

These flowers are known to be attractive to bees and butterflies.

Similarly to the lemon balm, lemon thyme gives off a citrus scent which cats dislike.

Other fragrant plants to deter cats:

  • Lavender
  • Rosemary
  • Rue
  • Catnip
  • Pennyroyal
  • Oregano
  • Curry plant

Laws around deterring cats

The RSPCA says: “Cats are protected by law and are free to roam meaning they might go into other people’s gardens or allotments. It is understood that some may wish to deter other people’s cats from those areas.

“But attempting to prevent cats from entering a garden or an allotment, it is important to make sure that any deterrent methods used are non-harmful and don’t cause pain, suffering, injury or distress.”

June gardening jobs

The Sun's Gardening Editor, Veronica Lorraine, has shared the tasks you should take this month.

Stake out leggy perennials

With all the dramatic weather we’ve been having, it’s definitely time to stake out your leggy perennials (the ones that come back every year). Heavy rain and growth spurts, can make them collapse and flop.

Picking out the slugs and snails

Hopefully as we move into summer they  will do less damage as the plants get bigger.  The best way is still to go out at night with a head torch to find them.

Pick elderflower heads

You can use them to make your own cordial, or add to cakes, champagne or even fry them in batter.

Get on top of weeds

It’s around now that weeds really ramp up in the garden, so keep on top of them with hoe-ing – or just the traditional ‘on your knees with a hand fork’. Try and avoid chemicals – remember weeds are just plants in the wrong place.

Up the mowing

You’ll need to mow your lawn weekly now – if you’ve got time, weed it beforehand as once you mow you chop off the leaves and its harder to see them.

Check on your tomatoes

Your tomato plants will need attention – water, feed and regularly and pinch out the sideshoots.

Chelsea Chop

There’s still time for the Chelsea Chop – plants like Rudbeckia’s, Asters, Penstemons, Sedums and other perennials can be cut back by a third to help them get a bit more bushy, and prolong the flowering period.

Sort out your tulips

If you can be bothered and have space – lift and story your tulip  bulbs to ensure colour next Spring.

Deadheading your roses

Take them down to the first set of healthy leaves – which will ensure more flowers for longer.

Enjoy your space

Take some time to sit and enjoy your garden or outside space – it’s great for your mental health. Even just a few minutes a day can make a big difference.

Homeowners are warned that causing unnecessary suffering to a cat is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 (AWA).

It may also be an offence to put down snares, poison or an unlicensed deterrent.

The AWA also prohibits poisoning protected animals.

The maximum penalty for anyone found guilty of an offence under the AWA is up to six months imprisonment and/or a £20,000 fine.

UK’s biggest energy supplier is paying customers to use less electricity again from this week

THE UK’s biggest energy supplier is paying customers to use less electricity again from this week.

Octopus Energy is bringing back its popular Saving Sessions for customers.

The scheme is a way for customers to earn rewards by reducing their electricity consumption during specific times when the national grid is under pressure.

Over the summer, households have a chance to use their washing machine and charge their devices for free if they shift their usage from peak times.

Octopus said the free electricity will be available during one hour slots that will usually be held in the early afternoon.

To be eligible for the scheme, you must be an Octoplus member, which is a free rewards program for the smart meter customers.

The energy supplier said nearly one million eligible customers from last year have been automatically opted in.

New customers can sign up via the Octopus Energy app or online

Households will get a notification the day before a Saving Session letting them know the event is about to start.

Octopus will use historical smart meter readings to work out a customer’s typical energy use at that time of day.

If the session is on a weekday, the calculation will look at half-hourly usage over the last 10 weekdays.

If the session is at the weekend, then it will look at half-hourly usage over the last four weekend days.

The figure is then used as a baseline – any power used above that baseline will be free.

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, chief product officer at Octopus said: “Calling all spenders and savers, grab your kettles and get those toasters ready cause we’re bringing back ‘Saving Sessions’.

“This time, we’re chuffed to offer even more fun, flair and fabulous prizes.”

Customers also have a chance to win prizes if certain targets are met, including a pink octopus toy and an electric car.

This isn’t the first time Octopus Energy has introduced innovative schemes to help its customers save money while supporting the energy grid.

Last year, the company launched “free electricity sessions” during periods of negative wholesale prices.

ENERGY SAVING SCHEMES

ScottishPower offers half-price electricity at weekends to its smart meter customers on both Saturday and Sunday.

Those registered for Power Saver will receive the discounted rate every Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 4pm.

Scottish Power will then credit your bill with money you’ve saved.

To join the scheme you will need to have a smart meter and then register for the scheme online.

You can register online by visiting /www.scottishpower.co.uk/login?go=/hem/power-saver-eligibility-checker.

For every month a customer’s peak energy usage is less than 15% they are entered into a prize draw.

Five customers win the top prize of £2,000 worth of energy to use over one year, with 200 winning £50 prizes and 22,850 receiving £2 of free energy.

Meanwhile, British Gas offers half-price electricity through its PeakSave scheme on Sundays between 11am-4pm.

The scheme rewards customers for shifting their electricity usage to times when there’s less demand.

To sign up customers need to be a British Gas customers, have a smart meter and then register online for the PeakSave scheme.

4 ways to keep your energy bills low

Laura Court-Jones, Small Business Editor at Bionic shared her tips.

1. Turn your heating down by one degree

You probably won’t even notice this tiny temperature difference, but what you will notice is a saving on your energy bills as a result. Just taking your thermostat down a notch is a quick way to start saving fast. This one small action only takes seconds to carry out and could potentially slash your heating bills by £171.70.

2. Switch appliances and lights off

It sounds simple, but fully turning off appliances and lights that are not in use can reduce your energy bills, especially in winter. Turning off lights and appliances when they are not in use, can save you up to £20 a year on your energy bills

3. Install a smart meter

Smart meters are a great way to keep control over your energy use, largely because they allow you to see where and when your gas and electricity is being used.

4. Consider switching energy supplier

No matter how happy you are with your current energy supplier, they may not be providing you with the best deals, especially if you’ve let a fixed-rate contract expire without arranging a new one. If you haven’t browsed any alternative tariffs lately, then you may not be aware that there are better options out there.

Holidaymakers are being diverted upon arriving at the airport[/caption]

Police confirmed that the incident occurred just before 11am and that only one vehicle was involved.

Emergency services dispatched a huge squad – made up of an “ambulance, an ambulance officer vehicle, a rapid response vehicle, the Hazardous Area Response Team and the Beds and Herts Critical Care Scheme” – to the scene.

The vehicle fell from Car Park 1 and one man is now in hospital with “serious” injuries.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Bedfordshire Police said: “Emergency services were called shortly before 11am to an incident involving a single vehicle at a multi-storey car park at London Luton Airport.

“Police, ambulance and fire crews are on scene. One person has been taken to hospital with injuries which are thought to be serious.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police via our website or on 101, quoting the reference 121 of 15 June.”

A spokesperson for Luton Airport has confirmed that arriving vehicles are having to be diverted following the incident.

The spokesperson said: “Emergency services were called shortly before 11am following a single vehicle incident at multi-storey car park 1.

” Following the incident, one person has been taken to hospital for further assessment.

“Airport staff are managing the exit of departing vehicles.

“Arriving vehicles are being redirected to the airport’s mid-stay car park until further notice.

“There is no disruption to wider airport operations.”

The news comes just months after Chancellor Rachel Reeves gave a green light to the government’s plans to expand Luton Airport.

Labour hopes to double the airport’s capacity from 18 million to 32 million in an ambitious plan which would include the construction of a brand new terminal.

The huge project is projected to cost over £2billion, but the government hopes the expansion project will deliver a boost to the economy.

Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson’s store ripped as ‘unimpressive’ & ‘cheap’ as customers warn ‘buyer beware!’

DUCK Dynasty star Willie Robertson’s store Duck Commander has been slammed as “unimpressive” and “cheap” by customers.

Willie, 53, owns Duck Commander in West Monroe, Louisiana with the warehouse holding a store, museum, tour and other family businesses.

On Duck Dynasty: The Revival, Willie revealed he hasn’t been as involved in the business recently, as he shocked workers by making a rare appearance at the store.

The U.S. Sun can exclusively reveal the shop has faced backlash from customers because of the “cheap” merchandise.

One customer wrote, “Just stopped in because we were in the area. Our kids used to love the show. Didn’t take the tour so maybe we should have, but the store was not very impressive. Not sure what I expected but definitely something more.”

Another commented, “Buyer Beware… Love the show and the family so of course we had to stop at the store on our way through town. I bought my son a hat and my daughter a shirt.

“When we got home from Spring Break, I washed the shirt and a lot of the brown paint came off the duck. I called the store and they told me to email customer service, which I did.

“Maybe they should pick a better screen printing company to work with, which would allow them to stand behind their merch!”

A third said, “Big disappointment! Used to be a cool place to stop and stretch your legs but it’s not what it used to be. Don’t waste your time.”

A fourth wrote, “Kinda small. Not much to it.”

But other fans loved the experience, as one wrote, “The Duck Commander was amazing. We particularly enjoyed the museum and it was well worth the money as each of us got to make a duck call.
It was a very special day bc they filmed an episode of Duck Dynasty: The Revival Season 1 the same day we visited.”

A second praised, “Absolutely loved the store and the self guided tour of the Robertson family history.”

The store sells merchandise including $34.99 shirts, $29.99 hats, $42.99 duck callers, $42 water bottles and more.

FAMILY BUSINESS

The Robertson family returned to A&E with Duck Dynasty: The Revival on Sunday, June 1.

On the premiere episode, Willie visits Duck Commander headquarters.

Even though he is head of the business, he was completely out of the loop with his wife, Korie, taking the reins.

He explained on the series, “Duck Commander warehouse is totally different, five or six businesses. It’s got a museum, family history, pretty much everything we’ve ever said or done is up on the walls of the museum.

“The gift shop, we have podcasts, we’ve written books, it’s a lot for one man to manage.”

When Willie showed up to the warehouse, he didn’t know the name of the woman at the front desk.

When a producer asked who is in charge of the business in a confessional with Willie and Korie, he said, “I am still currently in charge of this business.”

Korie smiled and quipped, “For the most part.

“It’s kind of complicated now because other people have really stepped up and done a great job of taking over different aspects of it.”

Willie then said, “Well when something big comes up I still come.”

Korie shot back, “Every few months.”

He then learned Korie runs the company meetings, which he didn’t know existed.

At the company meeting, Willie announced he is going to semi-retire and is looking for his replacement.

The U.S. Sun previously reported that despite Korie’s involvement in the company and his semi-retirement on the show, she has been snubbed from the business.

According to Louisiana business records, Willie is president and director of Duck Commander INC, while his late father, Phil, is listed as the director.

Korie is not listed on the business license.

Instead, she is listed as a member on Duck Commander The Tour, LLC while Willie is listed as the manager and the member.

-Son Jase, who is married to Missy, and share children Reed, Cole and Mia

-Son Willie, who is married to Korie, share six kids Sadie Robertson Huff, John Luke, Rebecca, Will Jr., Bella and Rowdy

RATINGS CRISIS

The U.S. Sun previously reported Duck Dynasty: The Revival premiere had just 510,000 viewers for the episode.

The Sunday, June 8 show dropped down to 438,000 viewers.

While the show exceeded the current programs on A&E, ratings plummeted drastically compared to its heyday.

The highest Duck Dynasty episode was on August 14, 2013.

The season four premiere drew a whopping 11.8 million viewers, making it the number one nonfiction series telecast in history at that time.

Duck Dynasty ratings remained in the millions throughout the show’s 11 seasons.

The final episode on March 29, 2017 brought in 1,507,000 viewers.

Variety reviewed the episode, claiming the show will “bore” viewers “to tears.”

One viewer said after watching the premiere, “Tonight’s show was a huge disappointment. I’ll watch next week bc I want this to succeed. Hoping it gets legs and takes off.”

A second commented, “Not the same without Phil, Godwin, Martin and Jep.”

A third wrote, “This is nothing but them sitting on a couch watching episodes I’ve already seen literally 25x. Very disappointed.”

This father’s day, offer dad forgiveness as much as celebration

What makes a father? Most every living thing has parents, but only a small minority of animals exhibit any degree of paternal care. Almost none approach the amount of male investment in children that characterizes human societies, and some of our closest primate relatives appear to be especially unlike us in this regard.  Fatherhood remains...
