I’ve walked the whole UK coast and this often-mocked island one hour from London is the friendliest seaside town

WHEN Quintin Lake travelled for five years around the UK, he encountered all sorts of coastlines, and people too.

For his new book The Perimeter, Quintin ventured across entire coastline of mainland Britain which covered 6800 miles and found what he called the “friendliest place I’ve ever been.”

He called Canvey Island the ‘friendliest’ place in the country[/caption]

Talking to Sun Travel about his coastal adventure, Quintin told us: “I thought Canvey Island in Essex was the friendliest place that I’d been.

“I wouldn’t knock places like that either because it’s really easy to get to from London.”

The Essex island in the Thames Estuary near Southend-on-Sea that’s separated from Essex by a network of creeks.

The island’s main attraction is an abandoned oil refinery which has since been turned into a nature reserve.

It’s now home to thousands of rare insects and plants, as well as nightingales, lizards and adders.

Almost surrounded by water, it’s no surprise that Canvey Island has lots of coastal spots that are popular with tourists.

Concord Beach is a hotspot for crabbing, and there’s even a tidal swimming pool.

Just along the coast is Thorney Bay Beach which in 2021 received a Blue Flag award.

The Canvey Seafront is a classic seaside resort, home to museums, cinemas, bingo halls, and a miniature railway.

For kids, there’s also Fantasy Island attractions, with rides and rollercoasters.

On the front is a huge 1930s cafe[/caption]

It’s now the only theme park on Canvey Island after the closure of Leisure Island Fun Park.

One of the biggest buildings on the front is Labworth Cafe, dating back to the 1930s, has been renovated and remains a beachfront dining area.

To get to the island, visitors can get the train to Benfleet train station which takes 40 minutes from London Fenchurch Street, and then a bus from there, taking around 45 minutes.

It wasn’t just Canvey Island that Quintin was charmed by, he even went so far as to say that Essex was the most “underrated” county in the UK.

He added that during his trip, he bumped into locals who were “really fun.”

He said: “It makes me laugh because all the counties next to each other have a real rivalry.

“Everyone in Suffolk says Essex is horrible, and everyone in Suffolk says don’t go to Essex.

“But I find it quite endearing that every single county reckons that theirs is the best.”

Photographer Quintin travelled through Wales, Scotland and England, finding incredible and sometimes hidden coastal spots.

All in all, he took 1,300 pictures and spent a lot of time wild camping.

Along the way he found some incredible spots like
Achmelvich Bay which he said looked like it belonged in the Bahamas.

There’s white sands and bright blue seas – the only big difference will be the weather.

I impulsively got a cheap BBL in Turkey then almost died – I was wide awake on the operating table and vomiting blood

A WOMAN has revealed she was left traumatised after jetting to Turkey for a BBL.

Kayla Jade, from Australia, claimed she almost died after getting the cut-price surgery done.

But he revealed she almost died trying to save cash[/caption]

Taking to social media, Kayla said: “So I almost died from my first BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) in Turkey and like I can be quite impulsive so I definitely rushed into it without thinking of the complications that the surgery may have had.

“I’m all about doing what makes you feel good but I kind of wish I knew what I knew now before I got my BBLs.”

She revealed that she got the surgery done several years ago, and she didn’t have much money, she ‘cheapened out’ and went to Turkey for it.

The package included the surgery, flights and accommodation and she was taken straight from the airport to the clinic.

But when she got there, they said the doctor was at the hospital so she had to go there for her consultation.

After getting to the hospital, they spend hours looking for the doctor only to be told to head back to the clinic.

The lack of organisation was just the start of Kayla’s nightmare.

When she eventually found the doctor, he told KAyla she didn’t have enough fat for the results she wanted, something she refuted as she had been gaining weight for the surgery.

She said: “It’s like he was trying to lower my expectations because he knew he was gonna cheap out and do a half-a**ed job.

“So I felt c**p, but I was like, I still had hope inside me.”

Kayla soon found herself on the operating table, and recalled being awake the entire time and was able to feel everything.

While they sucked the fat out of her body to place in her bum, she could feel the metal rod at work and the fat being ‘sucked’ off.

She continued: “I remember I could hear nurses and the doctors talking and I couldn’t move my body.

There was nothing I could do. I was just lying there in my head screaming.

Kayla Jade

“I was paralysed, but I could just feel like tears running down my face because I was in so much pain.

“There was nothing I could do. I was just lying there in my head screaming, but I could just feel all the stuff that was happening. I guess they didn’t give me enough anesthetic.”

When Kayla woke up from the surgery she recalls her body violently shaking and throwing up blood because of the shock.

She had also been placed on her back, despite having to lie on your stomach for six weeks after getting a BBL.

After spending the first day in and out of sleep she says she was then forced to get up and walk despite being in and out of consciousness.

Kayla says she begged the nurses to let her stay another night, but was refused and her stuff was packed and she was moved out.

When she finally made her way back to Australia, she noticed the fat removed from her back was done unevenly leaving her lopsided.

She also noticed her bum had barely increased in size, making the horrific surgery futile.

In the end, Kayla decided to get the whole thing reversed in Australia before getting another BBL done there too.

What are the risks of getting surgery abroad?

IT'S important to do your research if you're thinking about having cosmetic surgery abroad.

It can cost less than in the UK, but you need to weigh up potential savings against the potential risks.

Safety standards in different countries may not be as high.

No surgery is risk-free. Complications can happen after surgery in the UK or abroad.

If you have complications after an operation in the UK, the surgeon is responsible for providing follow-up treatment.

Overseas clinics may not provide follow-up treatment, or they may not provide it to the same standard as in the UK.

Also, they may not have a healthcare professional in the UK you can visit if you have any problems.

Source: NHS

“Please don’t cheapen out like what I did and end up in some crazy situation,” Kayla added.

The clip soon went viral on her TikTok account @blueeyedkaylajade with over 148k likes and people were quick to share their thoughts.

One person wrote: “Kayla, I haven’t even finished the vid yet and this is a horror story.”

Another commented: “Anesthesia awareness is my worst nightmare!”

“BBL’s are never worth it. The most dangerous surgery ever,” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “Wow I am imagining this experience as you talk and I am in pain.”

“The recovery alone for a BBL is a no for me haha,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “I’m so sorry. This sounds terrible.”

Beachgoers blocked from bringing popular item on sand under strict new ban – there’s a single exception

A SURPRISING item is now banned at a popular US beach destination.

Beachgoers will need to pack lighter this summer, as one city announced it will restrict items that can be brought to the beach, effective immediately.

Ocean City Beach will be restricting tents and canopies[/caption]

Officials in Ocean City, Maryland, voted to ban select tents and canopies that the public can bring to Ocean City Beach.

Vacationers will only be allowed to set up baby tents, but are prohibited from setting up any other types of tents.

Certain-sized canopies will also be restricted, local CBS affiliate WJZ reported.

Canopies are restricted to 10-by-10 feet and must be at least three feet apart from each other.

The new measure also prohibits canopies from being left unattended before 10 am.

Ocean City Beach Patrol Captain Butch Arbin told the outlet that the new rules are meant to help lifeguards have a clear view of swimmers and sunbathers.

In recent years, officials have noticed an increasing number of tents and canopies blocking lifeguards’ views.

“We saw large canopies and closed tents that blocked the views of other people trying to enjoy the beach, it limited the areas where people could go,” Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan said.

“Our beaches are extremely popular, they get very crowded, and we want to make sure everybody has an opportunity to enjoy the beach,” he added.

On the announcement for the new tent restrictions, the Town of Ocean City wrote that the “ordinance aims to enhance safety, improve visibility, and ensure a more enjoyable experience for all beachgoers.”

“We realize that canopies are important for sun protection,” Meehan stated in the announcement.

“We just want to make sure that what we’re not doing is making it so other people can’t enjoy their time out on the beach as well.”

The changes also aim to reduce crowding during peak beach season.

The announcement stated that the beach is following suit of nearby destinations that previously banned tents.

Delaware’s Rehoboth Beach banned tents, canopies, grills, and campfires back in 2017.

The ordinance was meant to prevent “tent cities” from forming, CBS News previously reported.

Canopy and tent guidelines

  1. Must be open on all four sides
  2. Size limit: no larger than 10ft x 10ft
  3. Keep at least 3 feet of space between your canopy and your neighbor’s
  4. Anchoring must stay within the footprint of the canopy
  5. No canopies left unattended before 10:00 a.m.
  6. Canopies must be placed behind the lifeguard stand
  7. Baby tents are permitted but no larger than 3ft x 3ft x 3ft

“We’ve seen people get in arguments over them,” Kent Buckson, captain of Rehoboth Beach Patrol, said.

“Some use them to illegally smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol on the beach and even set up toilets inside them.

“And it’s a problem that’s been getting worse over the last couple of seasons.”

Delaware’s ordinance only allowed umbrellas up to 7 feet, 6 inches.

Tyrese Haliburton rips into experts over NBA Finals predictions as he makes Indiana Pacers stance clear

INDIANA Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton has slammed experts for their forecast of the upcoming NBA Finals.

The two-time All-Star point guard Haliburton and the Pacers will take on the No. 1-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the 2025 NBA Finals on Thursday.

The Pacers have certainly exceeded expectations after beating the No. 1-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks during their playoff run.

Indiana is just four wins away from claiming their first-ever NBA championship, but analysts haven’t exactly given the team a vote of confidence.

The Thunder are heavily favored over the Pacers to win the NBA Finals.

But Haliburton is confident in his group and doesn’t mind analysts doubting his team.

“As long as the guys in our locker room and the people in this building believe, then you know, anything is possible. We’re really excited about the challenge,” Haliburton said during a press conference on Wednesday.

“No quote, unquote expert or analyst is going to pick us, and that’s okay.

“We like it better that way.”

The Pacers are one of the biggest underdogs in recent memory.

The Thunder have won seven games this playoffs by double digits, with four of those by at least 30 points.

And ESPN, which broadcasts the NBA Finals, asked 23 analysts to pick the winner of the Pacers-Thunder matchup, and 20 of them chose the latter team.

But that same number of ESPN analysts were wrong in picking the heavily favored Cavs to beat the Pacers in the second round of the playoffs.

The Pacers then backed up their play by knocking out the Knicks in six games in the ensuing series.

Oklahoma City presents the toughest challenge yet for Indiana, however.

They are led by 2024-25 MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has averaged 29.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.9 assists in the playoffs.

And the Thunder are coming off a dominant Western Conference Finals in which they defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games.

NBA Finals schedule

Thur 6 June - Game 1 - Dallas Mavericks 89-107 Boston Celtics

Sun 9 June – Game 2 – Dallas Mavericks 98-105 Boston Celtics

Wed 12 June – Game 3 – Boston Celtics 106-99 Dallas Mavericks

Fri 14 June – Game 4 – Boston Celtics 84-122 Dallas Mavericks

Mon 17 June – Game 5 – Dallas Mavericks 88-106 Boston Celtics

(Boston Celtics won 4-1)

The Pacers, meanwhile, will hope to continue their success on the road.

They are 6-2 on the road.

Oklahoma City will have home-court advantage in Game 1, which is set for Thursday night at 8:30 pm ET.

Embattled Sheriff Marcos Lopez who accidentally posted pic of dead girl’s body is arrested in new ‘racketeering’ scandal

THE cop who accidentally posted a picture of a dead teen’s body on his Instagram last year has now been suspended from office over a gambling and corruption scandal, police said.

Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez was arrested on Thursday morning and booked into jail on charges of racketeering.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said Lopez was arrested as part of a massive investigation into an illegal gambling operation and public corruption scheme.

Lopez was suspended from his role as he’s held in the Lake County Jail in Tavares, Florida, a suburb of Orlando.

Christopher Blackmon was appointed to replace Lopez, who has served as sheriff since 2021.

This isn’t the first time Lopez has made headlines for a public scandal.

Last year, Lopez came under fire when he accidentally posted a picture of Madeline Soto’s body on social media as cops investigated the 13-year-old’s death.

The case garnered national attention after Soto went missing in February 2024.

A few days later, her mom’s boyfriend was arrested as the last person to see the teen alive.

Soto’s body was found in a wooded area on March 1, 2024.

The day after the gruesome discovery, Lopez accidentally included a picture of Soto’s body at the crime scene in a photo dump meant to show a fun day with senior citizens.

The caption of the post said, “Great day with our seniors. #florida #senior @sheriffmarcoslopez,” with a halo smiley face emoji.

The disturbing picture in the carousel showed Soto’s body lying in a brush.

The post was quickly deleted and the department was forced to apologize.

“On March 2, 2024, a post was made on social media about a community event for seniors. In the post, an investigative photo was accidentally included,” a spokesperson said in a statement at the time.

“The photo was immediately removed. We deeply apologize for any confusion or disturbance this may have caused.”

Trump admits he’s ‘disappointed’ in Musk for slamming ‘big beautiful bill’ as Tesla boss hits back with flurry of posts

PRESIDENT Donald Trump has revealed why Elon Musk is so enraged by the ‘big beautiful bill’ currently making its way through Congress.

Musk has spent days criticizing the president’s signature spending bill and urging Republicans not to pass it, calling the legislation “a disgusting abomination.”

But Trump is standing by his plan, as he celebrated the bill’s “historic” $1.6 trillion in spending cuts when he was quizzed about it in the Oval Office on Thursday.

“We are doing things in that bill that are unbelievable,” the president said as he answered questions alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

When asked about Musk’s criticism, the president revealed that the two had been at odds before the tech leader stepped down as head of the Department of Government Efficiency.

He claimed the Tesla founder had been outraged over Trump’s decision to step away from a national electric vehicle mandate.

Musk wanted the federal government to go all in on EVs, because it would mean a windfall of money for his company, Trump claimed.

“You know they’re having a hard time, the electric vehicles,” he said.

“And they want us to pay billions of dollars in subsidies.”

But the president said it was always his intention to relax the mandates, as he pushes to use America’s natural gas and oil supply to achieve energy independence.

“Elon knew this from the beginning. He knew this from a long time ago,” said Trump, who has touted his plan to “drill baby drill” for oil.

The president said that the duo once had a “great relationship” but he doesn’t know exactly where they stand anymore.

“I was surprised […] We had a wonderful send off,” Trump said, referring to when Musk showed up to the Oval Office to get a symbolic key to the White House.

He reminded reporters that Musk had proudly worn a hat with the words “Trump was right about everything” emblazoned on the front.

“And I am right about the great big beautiful bill,” the president said.

“He knew the inner workings of the bill better than anybody sitting here. He had no problem with it.

“All of a sudden, he had a problem, and he only developed the problem when he found out that we’re gonna have to cut the EV mandate because that’s billions and billions of dollars.”

ELON HITS BACK

Musk, who had already been blasting the president all morning on X, quickly responded to Trump’s comments, saying, “Whatever.”

“Keep the EV/solar incentive cuts in the bill, even though no oil & gas subsidies are touched (very unfair!!), but ditch the MOUNTAIN of DISGUSTING PORK in the bill,” he wrote on X.

“In the entire history of civilization, there has never been legislation that both big and beautiful. Everyone knows this!

“Either you get a big and ugly bill or a slim and beautiful bill. Slim and beautiful is the way.”

Musk went on to claim that he never saw the spending bill and said that it was “passed in the dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it.”

“Without me, Trump would have lost the election,” the billionaire fumed.

“Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-19 in the Senate.

“Such ingratitude.”

Before Musk’s outburst, Trump said his ex-colleague “hasn’t said anything bad about me personally,” but quickly speculated, “I’m sure that’ll be next.”

“I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot,” he said.

TRUMP’S EV CUTS

Trump proposed steep cuts to tax credits designed to incentivize consumers into buying EVs in his spending bill, NPR reported.

The shift came after President Joe Biden heavily pushed for regulations that effectively forced American car companies to build electric cars.

Car buyers previously could get up to $7,500 in tax breaks if they purchased an EV, but this would officially be phased out by 2026 under Trump’s plan.

Consumers also could get a credit worth up to $4,000 for buying a used EV under the Democrats’ Inflation Reduction Act, but that’s set to be erased by the end of this year.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk's complicated relationship

Former president Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk's relationship started rocky, but the pair have since reconciled, with Musk fully endorsing Trump and interviewing him on X Spaces on August 12.

In 2022, Elon Musk and Donald Trump publicly feuded on X, then still known as Twitter.

Trump called Musk a liar and “bulls**t artist” during a rally in Alaska.

“Elon is not going to buy Twitter,” Trump said at the time.

“You know, he said the other day, ‘I’ve never voted for a Republican.’ I said, ‘I didn’t know that – you told me you voted for me. So he’s another bulls**t artist, but he’s not going to be buying it.”

In response to Trump’s critiques, the SpaceX founder clapped back.

“I don’t hate the man, but it’s time for Trump to hang up his hat & sail into the sunset,” Musk posted.

Musk also went on to buy X months later.

The X owner said he had previously voted mostly for Democrats since becoming a United States citizen in 2002.

Musk initially backed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to be the Republican Party’s presidential nominee.

“My preference for the 2024 presidency is someone sensible and centrist,” Musk wrote on X in 2022.

“I had hoped that would [be] the case for the Biden administration, but have been disappointed so far.”

His shift in political parties might be attributed to his plummeting relationship with President Joe Biden who didn’t invite Musk to the 2021 White House electric vehicle summit.

Despite their past issues, Trump and Musk’s relationship took a turn in March after they met at Mar-a-Lago.

Trump was also previously against electric vehicles but has since changed his stance.

“I’m for electric cars,” he said at a rally earlier this month.

“I have to be, because Elon endorsed me very strongly. So I have no choice.”

Following the assassination attempt at Trump’s rally in July, Musk announced his support for the former president.

“I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk wrote on X after the shooting.

During a recent press conference, Trump spoke highly of Musk.

“I respect Elon a lot. He respects me,” he said.

“Elon, more than almost anybody I know, he loves this country. He loves the concept of this country, but like me, he says this country is in big trouble, it’s in tremendous danger.”

Musk has been pictured at events at Mar-a-Lago and the UFC, buddying up with Trump.

Trump selected Musk to lead the Department of Government Efficiency – a taskforce aimed at cutting bureaucracy.

Car graveyard left floating in middle of ocean with 3,000 vehicles onboard as it sits abandoned

A CAR graveyard has been left floating in the middle of the ocean with thousands of vehicles on board.

A, now abandoned, cargo ship was carrying around 3,000 motors across the seas when it burst into flames.

The ship, The Morning Midas, was on a trip from Yantai, China to Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico.

Lithium ion batteries, used to power the electric vehicles carried by the ship, are thought to have started the blaze.

A deck carrying 800 of the electric cars started spewing plumes of smoke according to London based operator Zodiac Maritime.

The fire quickly spread out of control and the crew of 22 abandoned ship via lifeboat.

As the 600-foot ship burned three merchant ships alongside the U.S. coast guard were on scene to fight the fire.

Bloomberg reports that the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched aircrews and a cutter to the emergency.

The fleeing crew of The Morning Midas were picked up by the coast guard and transferred to one of the three merchant ships on the scene.

The dramatic incident has left the cargo ship sitting south west of Alaska with 3,000 burned out cars aboard.

With the blaze thought to be put out the ship has been left floating on the sea.

Zodiac Maritime has yet to confirm which brand of car was carried by the cargo ship.

At least 800 electric vehicles were on board and are presumed to have been the cause of the fire.

Around 3,000 cars in total were carried by the cargo ship as it made it’s journey.

70 of the cars carried by The Morning Midas were fully electric while around 680 were hybrids.

It is thought the ship has approximately 350 metric tons of gas fuel and 1,530 metric tons of very low sulfur fuel oil onboard.

Fighting electric fires at sea is a difficult operation with tens of thousands of gallons of water required to douse the burning batteries.

Using saltwater to put out lithium ion fires is not an option with the seawater being electrically conductive.

The Morning Midas reportedly activated its Co2 fire suppression system to fight the fire.

After the system was exhausted however the battery blaze started up again.

A cargo ship carrying electric vehicles has previously caught fire at sea.

The Felicity Ace burst into flames in 2022 with a lithium ion battery starting the blaze and the ship sinking as a result.

The tech giant is reportedly developing AI that could end up replacing human delivery drivers, according to reports.

Amazon is gearing up to trial the new robot delivery drivers, according to The Information – with a testing park reported to be under construction.

This facility in San Fransisco has been dubbed “humanoid park”.

It will help the company test robots on indoor obstacle courses, according to the report.

Amazon is yet to publicly confirm this, but the company has expanded the use of robots in its warehouses in recent years.

However, the use of robots for home deliveries would mark a substantial shift.

It means the futuristic idea of humanoid robots taking on jobs outside of warehouses and factories could be a reality before we know it.

Customers might soon open their doors to find a robot delivering their latest Amazon order.

These robots would be able to board Amazon’s fleet of Rivian electric delivery vans to embark on parcel deliveries.

Amazon currently has more than 20,000 Rivian electric vans, according to the website Elektrek.

That number is expected to rise to 100,000 by the end of the decade.

Amazon will reportedly be testing robots from a number of companies, including from Chinese firm Unitree.

The goal eventually to have a robot workforce that can navigate complex routes to deliver parcels, The Information’s report suggests.

It is not the first step Amazon will have taken towards automating its deliveries.

The Prime Air service deploys drones to deliver small parcels from the skies.

They are reportedly able to deliver small electronic items such as phones and AirPods in under an hour.

But the use of these drones is still relatively limited to a select few eligible locations.

The company has also announced an agentic artificial intelligence team this month.
