Scotland’s best and worst universities revealed
SCOTLAND’S best and worst universities have been revealed in new league tables.
The Complete University Guide analysed each of the country’s 14 institutions based on student satisfaction levels, entry standards, student-to-staff ratio, graduate prospects and more.



As young people prepare to choose a further education destination in the coming months, it might be helpful to consider where is the highest rated.
With that in mind, we compiled a list of The Complete University Guide’s best Scottish universities based on their overall score.
1. University of St Andrews
St Andrews came out on top in the overall ranking (94%) of Scotland’s best universities.
According to league tables, it scored 89.6 points out of 100 for graduate outcomes.
It also boasts an 83% student satisfaction rate and 98% continuation – the proportion of first-year students who continue their studies, leave with a qualification or transfer to a different university.
2. University of Edinburgh
This world-renowned institution has an overall ranking of 80% in the league table.
Edinburgh University scored 74% for student satisfaction and 98% for continuation.
3. University of Glasgow
Glasgow University has an overall score of 75% while student satisfaction is 76%.
Graduate prospects are 83%.
4. University of Strathclyde
This Glasgow university came in at fourth place overall with a student satisfaction rate of 78%, and an overall rating of 73%.
Strathclyde also scored 85.7 for graduate outcomes and has 95% continuation from students.
5. University of Aberdeen
Aberdeen University has an overall score of 70% and student satisfaction sits at 80%.
It also has impressive graduate prospects at 80%.
6. Heriot-Watt University
Edinburgh’s Heriot-Watt has an overall score of 70%, while student satisfaction is 73%.
It also boasts a research quality score of 80% and graduate prospects ranking of 82%.
7. University of Dundee
In seventh place, Dundee University has an overall score of 66% with a 76% student satisfaction ranking.
Graduate prospects are scored 82%.
8. University of Stirling
Stirling’s university has an overall score of 66% and student satisfaction is 75%.
Graduate prospects are 74%.
9. Glasgow Caledonian University
GCU has an overall score of 61% in The Complete University Guide’s league tables.
Student satisfaction is 77% and research quality is impressive with a 74% rating. Graduate prospects are 81%.
10. Edinburgh Napier University
Modern uni Napier has an overall score of 59% while student satisfaction is 78%.
Graduate prospects are good at 82%.
11. Robert Gordon University
Aberdeen’s RGU has an overall score of 58% and student satisfaction is 80%.
Graduate prospects are 81%.
12. Queen Margaret University
Situated in Musselburgh, Queen Margaret University has an overall score of 57%. Student satisfaction sits at 75%.
Graduate prospects are 76%.
13. Abertay University
Dundee’s Abertay has an overall score of 57% and student satisfaction is 81%.
Graduate prospects are 75%.
14. University of the West of Scotland
UWS has an overall score of 42%, while student satisfaction is 77%.
Graduate prospects are 71%.
