Chick-fil-A makes ‘worst’ cup swap at 3,000 locations leaving fans fuming – and your drink will taste different

CHICK-fil-A has left fans fuming after the fast food joint launched a major switch to its iconic drink cups.

As fans try out the chicken chain’s new cups, which are rolling out at its over 3,000 locations, they are complaining about more than just the altered taste.

Chick-fil-A is known among foodies for a number of things, from its friendly customer service and tasty chicken sandwiches to its nugget ice and waffle fries.

The fast food chain recently made a controversial change to its beloved waffle fries and is rolling out a change to yet another signature item – its Styrofoam cups.

In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, Chick-fil-A is in the process of replacing its iconic Styrofoam cups with paper and plastic alternatives, per the chain’s website.

The company began transitioning away from Styrofoam – a non-biodegradable material that can leach toxic chemicals into the environment – in 2023.

Then, beginning last fall, Chick-fil-A ditched its double-wall paper cups for cold beverages and treats in favor of single-wall paper and plastic cups.

While the switch has been ongoing, some fans are just taking notice – and are not pleased with the new cups.

“I’m fine with the fries change, but taking away the Styrofoam cup? This feels gross,” cried one customer in a Reddit post from early June, pairing their complaint with a photo of their paper cup.

Many Redditors similarly expressed their grievances with the new cups.

“Yuck. This place is the worst,” fumed one customer.

Several complained that the Styrofoam cups were sturdier and kept the ice from melting so quickly, with the original poster sharing that their drink already tasted watered down by the time they got home due to the paper cup.

Other diners had mixed feelings about the new paper cups, claiming that while they made their drinks “taste just a little funky” and “a bit off,” the fact that they were more sustainable than the Styrofoam cups made up for the taste.

On the other hand, some Chick-fil-A customers were all for the switch to paper cups.

“Honestly, I’m glad. I HATE Styrofoam. It squeaks,” said one user, as another complained that the former cups would sweats from the sides.

The U.S. Sun reached out to Chick-fil-A for comment on the new cups.

Beverage Ban

Styrofoam cups are made from polystyrene, a material banned in the following 12 states and Washington DC:

  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • New York
  • New Jersey
  • Vermont
  • Colorado
  • Virginia
  • Delaware
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • California
  • Washington
  • Washington DC

While all of Chick-fil-A’s over 3,000 US locations are getting rid of the Styrofoam cups, foodies in these areas may have seen the cup change first.

FRIED FRUSTRATIONS

Chick-fil-A’s switch to its signature cups sparked complaints, just as did the fast food joint’s waffle fries recipe change.

The chain rolled out a new version of its beloved fries earlier this year, adding a coating of pea starch to make them stay crispier longer.

“We know Chick-fil-A fans love our Waffle Potato Fries. We recently made a slight adjustment to our Waffle Potato Fries recipe, which offers the same great taste while also making our Waffle Potato Fries stay crispier, longer,” shared the chain.

Although Chick-fil-A claimed that the new recipe did not impact the taste, some foodies have complained that the new version was a downgrade.

“The new waffle fries are horrible,” cried one customer. “They are stale, dry, and hardened! My whole family hates them. I’m still in disbelief that this has happened.”

“Your new fries are terrible. I can’t even eat them anymore and they were my favorite thing. Please go back,” said another.

“Whyyyyy??? Why do fried potatoes need pea starch?” fumed a third.

Other fast food joints are also rolling out changes.

For example, a fan favorite chicken chain and Popeyes rival secretly changed a beloved menu item.

Meanwhile, McDonald’s and Chipotle released new summer menus.
