Cleveland Browns announces shock quarterback cut as part of 17 being axed as Shedeur Sanders faces questions over future

THE CLEVELAND BROWNS have announced a shock decision to cut a quarterback among their 17 exits.

Tyler Huntley is among the mass exodus of players, which leaves the Browns with four quarterbacks in the roster.

This includes Shedeur Sanders, 23, who endured a difficult outing in their final preseason game.

The star was handed an opportunity to impress by coach Kevin Stefanski, only to be benched for the final two minutes of the game.

He struggled to get rid of the ball as he was sacked FIVE TIMES while on the field of play by the Los Angeles Rams.

Sanders’ performance saw fans demand that he be traded away from the Browns.

However, he appears set to stay for the 2025 NFL season but will still have to compete with three other quarterbacks for gametime.

He is fourth in the pecking order behind No1 Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and rookie Dillon Gabriel.

Huntley, 27, only signed with the Browns earlier this month but did not do enough to convince Stefanski of a long-term spot.

The Browns ultimately cut 17 players in order to get their roster to the 53-man limit.

The likes of Chigozie Anusiem, Sal Canella, Javion Cohen, Sebastian Gutierrez, K.J. Henry, Ralph Holley, Christian Holmes were among the players left without a team

Sanders has had a difficult offseason following his NFL draft slide to 144th despite expecting to be a top pick.

He was visibly frustrated after being benched by Stefanski against the Rams.

He said via ESPN: “In the heat of the battle, you want to be that alpha.

“You want to be that dog. You want to be out there in that final two-minute drive.

“So of course, small things, of course frustrate, but that’s what happens when you want to be a player to be able to change a franchise.

“It wasn’t my decision… of course, that’s every quarterback’s dream and that’s what every quarterback thrives for – those moments – so it wasn’t me.”

Stefanski has since come under criticism that he has been holding Sanders back.

However, he has denied that idea and insisted he is only focused on improving the quarterback.

He said: “Obviously, I don’t concern myself with outside things, but I’m committed to his development, just like all of our rookies.

“We’ll continue to focus on getting our guys better, and that’s what we’ll stay committed to.

“That’s what’s important to me.”
