Hayes’ arrest is related to a May 10 crash that killed three people.
According to police, Hayes was “traveling at a high rate of speed and maneuvering aggressively through traffic” before hitting another vehicle.
The impact killed all three people in the other vehicle.
The occupants were a 78-year-old woman, a 10-year-old child, and a four-year-old child.
“It was discovered during the investigation that approximately five seconds prior to the fatal crash, Hayes made a rapid and dangerous maneuver, changing lanes from the curb lane to the median lane, crossing three lanes of traffic while overtaking other vehicles,” Largo police said in a statement.
“Moments later, Hayes abruptly re-entered the curb lane, again crossing all three lanes without signaling.
“At that point, Hayes’ vehicle collided with the 2017 Kia Soul, which was lawfully executing a left-hand turn westbound onto Orange View Drive.”
Another adult passenger was hospitalized with serious injuries but survived.
Hayes turned himself in, according to police, and has an additional charge of reckless driving.
He currently faces a $350,000 bond, according to the New York Post.
The investigation is still ongoing.
Hayes was a freshman at Miami last season, playing in 12 games.
He finished the season with four tackles and an interception.
It appears unlikely that he will play his sophomore season, which was set to start on Saturday.
