College football star issues groveling public apology for spitting at opponent – ‘there is no excuse’

FLORIDA Gators defensive tackle Brendan Bett has broken his silence after spitting at a rival player on Saturday.

The sophomore footballer was caught spitting at the South Florida Bulls’ offensive lineman Cole Skinner during the fourth quarter.

He has now issued a public apology on his Instagram account.

“I let down my teammates, coaches, family and all of Gator Nation,” Bett wrote.

“Our coaches always instill in us the value of sportsmanship and I crossed the line. I also want to apologize to South Florida

Bett was ultimately ejected for his action.

The Gators were handed a 15-yard penalty.

USF scored after a successful drive, with Nico Gramatica slotting a 20-yard field goal.

This pushed the Bulls 20-18 ahead to deliver their first win against their state rivals.

The Gators now stand at 1-1 in 2025 after claiming a 55-0 win against the LIU Sharks.

Coach Billy Napier, 46, has stated that Bett will be subject to internal discipline.

Bett has also extended his page-long apology directly to his opponent, Skinner.

“That’s not the person or player I strive to be,” added Bett. “I made a terrible mistake and it won’t happen again.”

“There is no excuse for my actions. I’m truly sorry to both you and your family.”

It is currently uncertain if the offensive tackle will play a part in the Gators’ next game.

Suggestions had been made that Bett could be suspended as Florida travel to the LSU Tigers this Saturday.

His actions have been compared to that of Philadelphia Eagles star, Jalen Carter, 24.

Carter spit on Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Dak Prescott, 32, before a snap had even been played in their NFL season-opener.

Like Carter, Bett has faced widespread criticism for the incident.

Bett played six times for the Gators during his freshman season in 2023.

He then redshirted the following year due to academic and injury issues.

Now in his third year at Florida, Bett will hope to recover from this incident to play a larger role on-field.
