COSTCO has been branded “insane and archaic” as shoppers beg the retailer to speed up the roll out of a popular checkout method.
The technology has been widely adopted by supermarket rivals who say it’s greatly reduced lines and waiting times.

Costco bosses say they’re testing out “Scan & Go” self-scan checkouts amid growing frustrations over “insane and archaic” lines.
One customer said: “you’ve really got to invest in scan and go self checkout, these lines are insane and archaic, it’s 2025 guys.”
CEO Ron Vachris said last week that the company had piloted the “Scan & Go” technology used by rival Sam’s Club.
It allows customers to shop and pay for items through an app before a store worker scans the digital receipt at the door.
The retailer, which sells wholesale food items and home furniture, said initial tests have proven “extremely successful” in moving people through lines more quickly.
The technology has gained wide praise from shoppers with one calling it “slick” and “quick”.
He said: “Sams club does scan and go and it’s slick and quick. I Use it all the time”.
While another added: “I loved it when we had Sam’s Club and I scanned my items as I took them off the shelves.”
On Costco adopting the latest technology, one commenter wrote: “It’s about time. I’ve been waiting for this to come to fruition. It’s a useful tool that I enjoy using at our Sam’s Club.”
Another Costco rival, BJ’s Wholesale, is also offering shoppers a quicker alternative to traditional checkouts.
Customers can opt for “Express Pay”, an app which enables members to pay for their shopping on their phone – avoiding long check out lines.
Costco boss Vachris said last week that they are continuing to “work on opportunities to further improve the member experience”.
He said shoppers should be “on the lookout for several new technology pilots we are focusing on to help our members check out through our front end at a faster pace.”
Costco is one of the most successful retailers in the country due to a variety of factors, from its affordable food court offerings and bulk buys to its friendly customer service and beloved Kirkland Signature products.
The warehouse club rakes in more and more money each year as its member count ticks upwards.
Costco’s revenue for the twelve months ending on May 31 was a whopping $268.78 billion, a nearly 6 per cent increase from the same time in 2024.
The beloved retailer outranks Sam’s Club as the most popular membership-based warehouse club in the country, holding roughly 62 per cent of the market in 2022, versus its rival at 31 per cent, per a CFRA report.
