Costco’s newest attempt at the missing combo pizza ‘fails miserably’

COSTCO has been slammed online for its attempt to replace the combo pizza that it had previously axed.

Customers’ online reviews revealed their underwhelmed reactions to the Costco Calzone, claiming that it wasn’t as good as the pizza.

Costco initially caught heat for getting rid of the Combo Pizza back in 2020, and then later introduced a take-and-bake version.

On the social media platform Reddit, shoppers seemed less than impressed at what Costco had replaced the Combo Pizza with, both in terms of look and taste.

One person wrote on a thread that they tried the calzone and thought it tasted “awful”.

While someone else criticized the calzone for its look, calling it a “deep fried half turtle shell[s].”

But some defended the calzone, saying that it tasted just like the Combo Pizza.

And another fan went a bit further to show their love for the calzone.

They wrote: I loved it. The shell is very crispy and the filling was tasty, maybe slightly on the salty side.

“But I just loved how crispy it is. It’s too much in one sitting for me so I cut it in half and saved the other half for later.

“Warms up nicely in an air fryer.”

The Combo Calzone is $6.99 and comes filled with pepperoni, sausage, cheese, tomato sauce, onions, peppers, olives, and mushrooms.

MIXED FEELINGS

When the Combo Calzone was first launched back in March, there were positive reactions online.

But there were still those crying out for the pizza to make a full comeback.

Costco never revealed why it discontinued the pizza, but the timing might have something to do with it.

The warehouse chain stopped selling the pizza at the height of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

Costco classic food court items

  • Hot Dog with Soda – $1.50
  • Pepperoni or Cheese Pizza slice – $1.99
  • Rotisserie Chicken Caesar Salad – $6.99
  • Turkey and Swiss Sandwich – $6.99
  • Double Chocolate Chunk Cookie – $2.49

Around that time, many retailers were struggling with supply chain issues.

By the time things slowly started getting back to normal, Costco might have decided that it wasn’t worth it to go back to selling the pizza.

Some of Costco’s food items, kike the $1.50 Hot Dog with Soda combo, will likely never be axed from menus.

There were some worries that Costco would hike the price of this iconic combo, however.

It came after an announcement of a food court remodel sent fans into a tailspin that the prices would be changed.

The price ended up staying the same, however, and is still available on Costco‘s food court menus at all of its warehouses.
