A CULT-FAVORITE discount chain is growing its store footprint, eyeing the grand opening of nine locations in a key state.
As Daiso plots to open the new spots throughout 2025, the Japanese dollar store is giving rival Dollar Tree a run for its money.

Daiso is an up-and-coming Japanese retailer beloved among shoppers for its vast selection of affordable products.
The store offers a range of items for a couple of bucks, such as household goods, stationery, cosmetics, and Japanese snacks.
Daiso emphasizes affordability, quality, and uniqueness in its product offerings, making it a fan-favorite store among Americans since its arrival here in 2005.
The chain, which ended 2024 with 167 stores across eight states, is growing its customer base as part of an ongoing expansion across the US.
Daiso is opening nine spots across California throughout this year in the following cities:
- Aliso Viejo
- Reseda
- San Ysidro
- La Quinta
- Redding
- Palm Springs
- Salinas
- Modesto
- Arroyo Grande
Coachella Valley residents are hopeful that the new Palm Springs store will set the scene for a large Asian supermarket chain such as H Mart or 99 Ranch.
“Big things finally happening here,” said one shopper on a Reddit post regarding the impending Daiso spot.
Other Redditors were likewise excited about the discount chain’s expansion in California, praising Daiso’s fun and budget-friendly selection.
“Cute and clean. Lots of Disney stuff and household goods. Take the kiddos there every once in a while to pick up glow sticks and party stuff for dance parties at the house,” said one Redditor.
“Definitely a very different vibe than a traditional dollar store with a Japanese twist to it. Also has self checkout, which is great!”
ON THE RISE
Despite President Donald Trump’s tariff threats on foreign imports, the Japan-based company is growing an even greater presence in The Golden State.
Daiso previously opened four new stores on January 4 in Santa Maria, Foster City, Apple Valley, and Riverside.
“California has been a key market for us, and we’re grateful for the support of our customers. These new stores reflect the demand for Daiso’s wide range of affordable and innovative products,” said Jack Williams, chief retail operations officer for Daiso USA in a press release.
