CVS promises probe after worker ‘REFUSED to serve’ shopper and ‘gazed’ at her until one minute past closing

CVS Health has vowed to look into an incident where a customer claims she was glared at until 1 minute past closing time.

The woman warned others on social media not to go to an Emporia, Virginia CVS location after she claimed the employees were unhelpful.

“If you have an emergency run @cvspharmacy @CVSHealth don’t stop,” the woman, who went by the name Elizabeth Bridget, posted on X.

“Stood at the counter while three…looked out at the drive thru. Just gazing,” she wrote.

“By the time one noticed me she refused to serve me saying she was closed.”

She then claims that it was just 8:01 p.m., one minute after the pharmacy had closed, when the worker decided not to help.

“That’s on them,” she posted.

“Do better.”

Underneath the post, CVS reached out to her and said that they’d like to learn more about the incident.

They also asked her to send along contact information so their team could get in touch with her.

In another post, she called the interaction “such inappropriate behavior.”

Pharmacy stores have been closing left and right in the United States, with CVS announcing a plan to shutter 270 CVS shops this year alone.

The company had planned to close at least 900 stores in three years, with 851 locations closed as of August 2024.

“We’re realigning our retail footprint, reducing store density and optimizing our existing stores and pharmacies,” a CVS spokesperson said at the time of the store closure announcement.

“We closed 900 stores between 2022 and 2024, and are planning to close an additional 270 stores in 2025.”

They did say, however, that despite closures they still plan to add almost 30 stores this year.

CVS closes 900 stores

CVS Health is finishing up its three-year plan to close 900 stores.

CEO Karen Lynch said it has shut down 851 so far, The Associated Press reported in August 2024.

The company announced the plan in November 2021, saying that the closures would lead to a retail presence that ensures it has the “right kinds of stores in the right locations for consumers and for the business,” per CNN.

The shutdowns amount to almost 10% of CVS’s footprint, in response to the shifting of “consumer buying patterns.”

The closures are part of a wider change in strategy of the company’s almost 10,000 locations.

Some stores have been removed to include more health services, such as primary care, and an “enhanced version” of CVS’s HealthHub layout.

“We remain focused on the competitive advantage provided by our presence in thousands of communities across the country, which complements our rapidly expanding digital presence,” Lynch said in 2021.

The shutdowns cost the company approximately $1 billion dollars in the fourth quarter of 2021, according to CNN.

“[W]e’re also opening stores and pharmacies in areas where there’s a need,” the company said.

“In fact, we opened 100 stores between 2022 and 2024 and have plans to open nearly 30 CVS Pharmacy locations, including those inside Target stores, in 2025.”

Rite Aid and Walgreens are also suffering.

Walgreens has said that they planned to close more stores in 2025.

Rite Aid, on the other hand, has filed for bankruptcy twice in the past two years.

“While we have continued to face financial challenges, intensified by the rapidly evolving retail and healthcare landscapes in which we operate, we are encouraged by meaningful interest from a number of potential national and regional strategic acquirors,” Rite Aid said.

“As we move forward, our key priorities are ensuring uninterrupted pharmacy services for our customers and preserving jobs for as many associates as possible.”

CVS told the US Sun that they “reached out to the patient to learn more about her pharmacy experience.”
