Coastal Orthopedics & Sports Medicine is an orthopedic practice located in Florida.
The company provides many services, including joint replacement, sports medicine and physical therapy.
Coastal Orthopedics has been hit with claims that it failed to do enough to prevent a data leak in June 2023.
This incident is said to have compromised sensitive patient information, according to the plaintiffs.
The information that was leaked included Social Security numbers.
The lawsuit states that Coastal Orthopedics failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures that would’ve prevented the attack.
Coastal Orthopedics has not admitted to any wrongdoing, but has agreed to pay out $1.4 million to settle the claims against it.
This is to prevent this case from possibly going to trial.
HOW MUCH WILL YOU BE PAID?
The settlement benefits those who possibly had their private information accessed by an unknown third party.
Class members are eligible to receive a one-time cash payment as reimbursement.
For documented monetary losses as a result of the breach, plaintiffs can receive up to $10,000.
These losses include things like credit monitoring costs, unreimbursed bank or credit card fees or communication expenses.
Documented refers to the proof of purchase you need to provide to claim up to $10,000.
You need to be able to prove you suffered a financial loss, through something like a bank statement, receipt or invoice.
What’s a class-action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or ‘classes,’ a way to band together in court.
These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.
When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.
Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.
These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.
Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.
Class members are also eligible to receive an additional cash payment if their Social Security information was compromised during the leak.
If it was, you are eligible for three times more in pro rata payments than someone who didn’t have their Social Security compromised.
Pro rata refers to an equal proportion, so the exact amount paid out per individual will be determined by how many eligible claimants there are.
The more claimants there are, the more people the money will need to go between, meaning less per person.
Aside from the financial compensation, class members can also receive up to two years of free credit monitoring services.
This can come in many forms, including $1 million in fraud and identity theft insurance and medical information monitoring.
WHEN IS THE DEADLINE TO CLAIM?
If you do not submit a claim form by the deadline, you will not be considered for a payment.
Also, note that if you knowingly submit a fraudulent claim, you will be harming eligible plaintiffs.
The claim form deadline in this class action is set for August 13, 2025.
