The fee – which added 20 per cent to the total bill – was labelled “quiet time surcharge”.
In a now viral Reddit post, the user said they had attended a new restaurant that “seemed quiet”, but were shocked to see the surcharge.
Thinking it was a mistake, the diner questioned the charge.
Their server said it was a management decision.
“Management says when it’s not busy, you’re basically getting the place to yourself,” the server said.
“It’s kind of like flying private instead of commercial.”
The outraged diner said they “had to laugh”.
“Are you kidding me?” They wrote.
“I’m not chartering a restaurant, I just wanted dinner.
“If anything, it’s less service work when the place is empty.”
The post went on.
“So now we’re at the point where restaurants tack on fees not because they’re busy, but because they aren’t. That’s wild,” they added.
The dinner receipt opened an online can of worms, as Reddit users weighed in.
One person said “You didn’t book the whole restaurant for yourself; it just happened to be empty. I hope you didn’t pay that fee”.
Another observed: “If this is a true story, I foresee a much quieter time in this restaurant’s future“.
A third said the restaurant was “lucky” to have customers in quiet times.

“They could have had zero customers, which is hopefully what they have in the future when you never come back and give it a one-star review.”
Other posters questioned the validity of the claim, with one person saying “This has to be satire, it can’t be real lol”.
Another person wrote “Post the receipt, otherwise it’s just a story time”.
This comes after an Italian restaurant was caught charging customers a music tax for background music.
A group of diners were left outraged when they found they’d been charged £1.70 each in southern Italy.
When they questioned the charge, the server told them it was to “help cover the costs of the DJ”.
The tourists recalled: “The music was very good, but no one expected to be charged for the background music”.
