PurFoods is a meal delivery service that sends out meals to seniors and those recovering from surgeries.
It also provides its services to those who may need assistance preparing meals, as well as to schools, hospitals and nursing homes.
PurFoods has been accused of failing to prevent a data leak in 2023 that compromised employee and customer information.
Claimants believe that PurFoods didn’t implement reasonable cybersecurity measures.
They believe that this would’ve been enough to stop the data from being leaked to unauthorized third parties.
PurFoodfs has not admitted any wrongdoing in this case, but has agreed to a $4.25 million pay out to settle the claims against it.
This settlement benefits those who received a notice from PurFoods that their information may have been compromised in the leak.
This specifically applies to the period between January 16 and February 22, 2023.
HOW MUCH WILL YOU BE PAID?
Under the terms of the settlement, class members are eligible to receive financial reimbursement for documented losses related to the data leak.
Claimants can receive up to $5,000 if they can prove they suffered out of pocket losses due to their information being leaked.
An out of pocket expense would cover something like identify theft or fraud losses, credit costs and bank fees.
Those who did not suffer a documented financial loss can be still get paid under the terms of the settlement.
These payments will be pro rata based, meaning it will come as an equal proportion of the funds left available.
The less claimants there are, the more money each person without a documented loss will be paid.
What’s a class-action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or ‘classes,’ a way to band together in court.
These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.
When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.
Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.
These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.
Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.
The settlement website estimates that these payments are around $75.
PROOF OF PURCHASE
There are some specific rules when submitting proof of purchase you need to be aware of.
Claims must be accompanied by proof of any unreimbursed documented losses.
Any documents that are self-prepared, meaning ones that are not officially issued like a handwritten receipt, are insufficient.
On its own, a handwritten receipt would not be enough to receive a payout.
However, it can add clarity or support other submitted documentation provided that shows proof, like an invoice.
DATES FOR YOU TO KNOW
If you do not submit a valid claim form by the deadline, you will not be considered for a payout.
Also note that if you knowingly submit a fraudulent claim, you are harming those who are eligible to receive compensation.
The deadline to submit a claim form is set for October 30, 2025.
