A DISCOUNT supermarket chain that fans believe to be “cheaper than Walmart” is opening two new locations this summer.
The chain has bold expansion plans, with one store having already opened this year and more on the way.
Wegmans is bringing new stores to customers this summer, part of its aim to introduce three in 2025.
This might not seem like a lot, and Wegmans is aware of this.
The company has said that while it is constantly receiving requests to build stores, it only builds “two or three new stores each year.”
The first one built in 2025 has already opened and can be found in Lake Grove, New York.
Doors were opened on February 26, and it marked Wegman’s first voyage to Long Island.
The next one is coming this month, so shoppers don’t have long to wait, with the third and final one to open in July.
The upcoming opening is scheduled for June 25 for a store in Rockville, Maryland.
The Rockville location will be the company’s ninth store in Maryland, according to Wegmans.
Then, just over a month later, July 26 sees the introduction of a new location in Norwalk, Connecticut.
Much like how the Lake Grove spot is the first Wegmans to hit Long Island, the Norwalk spot is the first to come to Connecticut.
FUTURE PLANS
Then, more Wegmans can be expected next year.
Wegmans told USA Today that it will be opening a new store in Charlotte, North Carolina, in late 2026.
But that’s not all, as there are more stores in the works.
Extra locations are planned for Holly Springs, North Carolina, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Opening dates have not been given for either of these.
If Wegmans says it builds two to three stores a year, it could suggest shoppers will get both of these next year, too.
Wegmans is growing, and there are shoppers pitting it against some of the biggest names in retail.
One enthusiastic Facebook user posted on the social media platform: “That moment you find out that Wegmans might be cheaper than Walmart.”
Wegmans has over 100 locations along the East Coast, and has noted that its expansion plans are concentrated “in the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions.”
Shoppers can find Wegmans stores in many states, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Delaware.
