DMV headache spirals into a nightmare as drivers get text confirmation of appointments only to find office closed

AMERICANS are frustrated with the Department of Motor Vehicles after arriving for their appointments to find the building is closed.

DMV customers showed up for their appointments only to discover that the agency was closed for the day due to network outages.

Signs on the door of the Nevada DMV informed customers that it was closed on August 25 and August 26.

“I’m trying to make an appointment, I’ve been trying to make an appointment for two days,” Nevada local Marian Lewis told CBS affiliate KLAS

“I wasted my time coming down here, absolutely.”

Lewis has been attempting to obtain her Real ID so she can meet the new federal requirements for flying.

“Even though they let me get on the plane, they keep telling me I need the ID, so that’s why I’m here,” a frustrated Lewis told the outlet.

“People ain’t got time for this, it’s ridiculous.”

Several customers had already scheduled appointments and were never notified of the closure despite having received a confirmation text earlier that day.

“My initial reaction was that it was a mistake, because I received a text message this morning confirming my appointment that I’ve been waiting about a month for,” DMV customer Brittany Robinson told the outlet.

Robinson said she was frustrated over having to take time off work just to show up and find the building was closed.

“I just wish instead of a confirmation text for my appointment this morning, I would have received an email or text saying that my appointment was cancelled,” she explained.

“That way, I would’ve rearranged things.”

Kenneth Powers, another DMV customer, echoes Robinson’s frustration.

Powers arrived for his DMV appointment on Monday to register his vehicle, just to be greeted with locked doors.

“The problem is, I’ll have to replan another day to come down here, make another appointment, so I can get the things I need to get done with the DMV, at a future date,” Powers said.

How to prepare for the DMV

Here are some ways to streamline your DMV experience:

  1. Check the DMV website for your state to see if the task can be done completely online. Many processes can now be done online, like renewing a vehicle’s registration or changing an address. Otherwise, several processes can be started online and finished at an in-person location, like renewing a driver’s license.
  2. Schedule an appointment. While walk-ins are available at all locations, having an appointment time can help reduce frustrating wait times.
  3. Check the DMV’s website to ensure you have all the necessary forms for the task.
  4. Get there early. Since many people prefer to try and tackle simple tasks on their lunch breaks or days off, showing up early can mean you’re only one of a few.
  5. Eat before you go or bring a snack. Since wait times can exceed expectations, bring some form of sustenance.
  6. Be positive. The process is temporary.

The DMV doors had a QR code customers could scan to reschedule or book an appointment once the building reopened.

While no official statement was made on customers’ frustrations with the closure, the DMV posted on Instagram that it closed due to network outages.

“The Governor’s Technology Office is reporting significant state network degradation affecting the ability to conduct normal business,” the post read.

“These conditions will likely last the entire day.

“We will update as we know more.”

The agency updated Americans in the post’s comments, writing: “As of August 26, 2025, all DMV offices remain CLOSED due to network issues. Please continue to check our social media for updates.”
