Dollar Tree shoppers ‘shocked’ after common item scans at checkout for eye-watering $9

DOLLAR Tree shoppers have been left in shock after seeing an everyday household item scan for an eye-watering $9.

Raging customers were left horrified after one social media user told how they paid nearly $10 for a basic item at the retailing giant.

The user said on Facebook that they had paid $9 for a common kitchen item.

And it set them back so much that they took to social media to vent their anger.

The outraged shopper paid the eye-watering sum – to get a pack of Bounty paper towels.

The user said online: ” I was shocked when Bounty paper towels rang up $9 …..(yes at Dollar Tree)”

One shocked user replied: “Are you serious? That’s terrible. They are becoming like the Dollar Store now.”

Another chimed in: “I know! I think Walmart charges less!”

And one more said: “9 dollars you can get 12 double rolls at Costco for 18 dollars.”

To which another user replied: “I know … it’s crazy.”

The outrage unfolded in the comments of a Facebook post slamming the price of other catering supplies sold at the bargain chain.

The original post had a picture of plastic dining items selling for $2 each.

Many cried out in the comments blasting the inflated price.

The fee could buy users six plastic glass cups, or only about a dozen plastic cups.

The user said: “Dollar Tree Price $2.00 ITS DONE.”

One user commented: “One day we will be taking our children/grandchildren to this store and saying I remember when everything in this store was $1…”

Another said: “$2 for 4 cups i think not lol.”

A third weighed in saying: “I recently spent $200 in 20 minutes at the Dollar General…only thing that was actually $1 was a container of orange Tic Tacs.”

And one more slammed the chain, saying: “Walmart or dollar general…dollar tree ceo getting greedy.”

The price outrage comes after rival brand Walmart competed with Dollar Tree by offering summer parties and festivities items for just for just 97 cents.

The retailer is providing the bargain service, advertised as being “fast, easy, and affordable,” just days after Dollar Tree’s pricing switch-up had shoppers up in arms.

Walmart and Dollar Tree are fierce competitors in the retail landscape, both working to win over consumers’ dollars with discounted goods and affordable prices.

The former store, the largest retailer in the world, is “coming for Dollar Tree” with its latest move, according to shoppers.

Walmart is now offering balloon inflation services for just 97 cents according to an in-store sign, shared on a customer’s recent Facebook post.

Dollar Tree’s recent price increases

Dollar Tree, formerly named Only $1.00, originally started with a fixed price of just $1 per item.

After 35 years at that price, the chain jumped to selling items for $1.25 in 2021, also announcing it would expand merchandise to include $3 and $5 items.

Dollar Tree has continued bumping up its prices, with stores increasing their base price from $1.25 to $1.50 for some items, also raising the maximum price to $7.

Under its most recent price jump, some items are climbing in price by 40%, with the base price of many Dollar Tree items now standing at $1.50 or even $1.75.

The price hikes currently underway are the result of increased costs and the need to maintain profitability in such a volatile inflationary environment, with tariffs on China also cutting into profits.
