Drivers face dozens of road closures over Labor Day weekend as record numbers expected – see highways to avoid

THE last few days of the summer see drivers from all over the country traveling this weekend.

But road closures may affect the way Labor Day travel goes for thousands of people.

Some states will not get much relief from roadwork this weekend due to the complexity and size of certain projects.

In Detroit, multiple road closures will stay in place as the work projects are too large to clear up before Labor Day.

According to the state’s Department of Transportation, 61% of restrictions will be lifted, but many others will stay in place.

“We thank all drivers for their continued patience while much-needed road and bridge work occurs across the state,” Michigan Transportation Director Bradley C. Wieferich said.

“Please continue that patience this final holiday weekend of the summer, as there will be various work zones that will need to have lane restrictions remain in place for everyone’s safety.”

One closure, located on eastbound I-696 in Oakland County, Michigan, has no plans of going anywhere for the holiday.

Multiple lane and ramp shutdowns will also stay in place on the Lodge Freeway.

Other closures continuing throughout the weekend include parts of I-75, M-26, M-48, and more.

In California, some lane and ramp closures will remain in effect, too.

Parts of I-80 in Placer County will have some lane closures, alongside Highway 41, which has a portion of the road closed.

Vice President JD Vance is holding up traffic in one part of the country as well.

In Cincinnati, the city is closing down multiple roads near his house in East Walnut Hills.

It is not clear if he will be home this weekend to celebrate the holiday.

Most states are, however, lifting their roadwork closures for the weekend in preparation for high traffic.

New September driving laws and rules

The busiest days are anticipated to be Friday and Saturday, even though the actual holiday isn’t until Monday.

“While some people are going on dream cruises or European vacations, many travelers are staying closer to home and taking road trips to nearby beaches or national parks,” Stacey Barber, the vice president of AAA Travel, said.

Labor Day caps off summer travel and provides one final holiday weekend before the fall routine begins.”

Travel experts have recommended leaving as early as possible to avoid congested streets.

“Saturday is expected to be extra busy with many drivers heading out of town or taking day trips,” according to AAA.

“[F]or those hitting the road on Saturday, the earlier, the better.”
