Drivers in US state face $100 fines under new ‘camera zone’ law as grace period ends

SPEEDING drivers will now be hit with $100 fines after a grace period for new school-zone speed cameras ended.

The crackdown is happening in Doral, Miami-Dade County, Florida, where cameras are now fully active outside more than a dozen schools.

Motorists caught going more than 10mph over the limit will be fined automatically.

They’ll get 30 days to pay up or fight the ticket in a hearing.

The cameras are switched on 30 minutes before school starts, stay live through the day and for 30 minutes after classes end.

They won’t be running on weekends or public holidays.

Cops say it’s all about protecting kids.

Doral Police Chief Edwin Lopez said: “We’ve had kids hit by motorists driving next to us, we’ve had students killed years ago in our school grounds here in Miami-Dade County as well.

“So this helps educate the community that we take an active stand towards this.”

The devices have been installed outside elementary, middle and high schools across the city.

Officials insist they’re clearly marked so drivers have time to slow down.

The 30-day warning period finished on September 14, meaning drivers no longer get off with just a notice.

Upcoming laws and their dates

  3. Ohio’s 50 hour law will force drivers aged 18, 19, and 20 back into the classroom and practice cars starting on September 30, regardless of how pristine their driving history is
  4. Oklahoma’s new yield law aimed at protecting motorcyclists from injury or worse goes into effect on November 1, and will see those refusing to yield right of way hit with several potential punishments
  5. Philadelphia puts speed cameras on one of its busiest and most central thoroughfares on September 15, with a 60 day warning period starting on this date to give motorists time to adjust
  6. Shelton, Connecticut’s AI-powered school bus cameras are already looking out for reckless drivers, with a warning period underway that ends on September 29
  7. Oklahoma’s Marissa Murrow Act goes into effect on November 1, and will reform both how DUI offenders are punished and how state bartenders are trained
