ESPN releases statement after announcing shock decision to AXE Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee documentary

ESPN has decided to axe a documentary about former NFL player Colin Kaepernick.

The eight-part series about the quarterback’s life and career was directed by Spike Lee.

But ESPN announced that the documentary would not be released.

A statement read, “ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences.

“Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film.”

Director Lee also confirmed that the project was being canceled but refused to elaborate on why.

“It’s not coming out. That’s all I can say,” he told Reuters.

“I signed a nondisclosure. I can’t talk about it.”

The documentary was announced in 2020 and production began in 2022.

The announcement from ESPN comes just weeks after a deal with the NFL.

ESPN is purchasing NFL Red Zone, NFL Network and other league assets.

And the NFL is receiving equity in the sports network in return.

Kaepernick, 37, played for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2016.

In 2016, he decided to knee when the US national anthem was being played before a game.

The quarterback was protesting against police brutality and social injustice.

He said at the time, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.”

Kaepernick didn’t play in the NFL after the 2016 season and filed a lawsuit against team owners.
