Footage of the incident went viral after Kamil Majchrzak’s victory in five sets.

Majchrzak was seen signing autographs for fans before taking off his cap and handing it towards a young fan.

However, while he wasn’t looking, Szczerek snatched the hat and stashed it in a bag.

Majchrzak never noticed that the hat was taken, but people on the internet did.

Szczerek was branded the “most hated man on the internet” for taking the hat.

Fans were also labeling him as the “new Coldplay kisscam CEO.”

Even former players got in on the action, with Genie Bouchard writing “jail” in response to a video of the hat snatching.

With so much attention on the situation, Szczerek released a statement on his Facebook page apologizing and revealing that the hat was returned to the boy.

“Due to the situation that happened during Kamil Majchrzak’s match at the US Open, I would like to clearly apologize to the injured boy, his family, as well as all the fans and the player himself.

“I have made a huge mistake.

“In emotions, in the crowd rejoicing after the victory, I was convinced the tennis player tips his hat in my direction – to my sons who have asked for autographs earlier.

“The misconception caused me to pull out my hand.

“Today I know I did something that looked like a deliberate collection of the child’s souvenir.

“This was not my intention, but it doesn’t change the fact I hurt the boy and disappointed the fan.

“The hat was given to the boy, and apologies to the family. I hope. Just Partly. I have repaired the hurt that has been done.”

The story does have a happy ending, as Majchrzak tracked down the boy after the video went viral.

He met the fan and posed for pictures with him to make him feel better.

“It was a very nice meeting,” he told SunSport.

“I wanted to meet the boy Brock and his family and just try to make things right for him.”

Majchrzak also asked fans to back off of Szczerek now that the situation has been resolved.
