Moten’s daughter Lawrencia confirmed her father’s passing, per Syracuse.com.

No cause of death has yet been confirmed.

But there are no reports of foul play.

Moten starred for Syracuse between 1991 and 1995, becoming the program’s all-time leading scorer.

Nicknamed ‘Poetry in Moten’, he was prolific at the rim and scored double figures in 118 of 121 collegiate games.

Moten was drafted in the second round by the then Vancouver Grizzlies in 1995.

He spent three seasons in the NBA before heading into coaching.

“The NBA mourns the passing of Lawrence Moten (1972-2025),” a statement read from the league read Tuesday.

“Lawrence played 3 NBA seasons with the Vancouver Grizzlies and Washington Wizards.

“He was also Syracuse University’s all-time leading scorer with 2,334 career points.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Moten family.”

“Poetry in Moten. Loved that dude,” replied one devastated fan.

“One of my all-time favorite players from his time at Syracuse. Will live in my mind forever,” said another.

“Man I’m devastated…he was one of my favorite college players ever. RIP,” added a third.

Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim, who recruited and coached Moten, called it a tragic day for the Syracuse basketball family.

“Lawrence’s passing is such a sudden thing – it’s very hard to take,” Boeheim said.

“He was one of the most underrated college basketball players of all time.

“I believe some people took his ability for granted because he made it look so easy.

“Lawrence was one of our greatest players and one of the best in the history of the Big East Conference.”
