A FIRST-of-its-kind car has been unveiled in the United States as part of a brand new safety drive.
It follows other efforts across America to bring new technology into policing.
The cutting-edge police vehicle was revealed in Northeast Miami-Dade, Florida, where the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office showed off the country’s first ever autonomous patrol cruiser.
Among its futuristic features are 360-degree cameras, thermal imaging, number plate recognition and even a system to launch drones.
The self-driving car is packed with state-of-the-art technology, which officers say will make patrolling the streets and serving the community easier than ever before.
Police chiefs say the high-tech kit will be put through a pilot programme in a bid to enhance safety across the county.
Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said: “To lead the way when it comes to resources and how we serve our community is absolutely what I’m about and what the future for this county should expect from us.
“I think it’s such an important key piece to be able to provide our community touch points and technology that will only make us a safer place to be.”
The unmanned vehicle will not replace officers but is designed to work alongside them, providing extra eyes on the ground and responding to incidents quicker.
In New York, the NYPD has tested robotic “dog” units for building searches and bomb threats, while Los Angeles has trialled drones to monitor crime scenes and dangerous pursuits.
Elsewhere, departments in states including California and Texas have begun experimenting with AI-driven systems to scan licence plates and spot wanted vehicles in real time.
Residents in Miami-Dade will be able to see the new patrol car in person, as it goes on display at community events throughout October.
Officials hope the project will set a new standard for policing in the US, blending technology with law enforcement in a way never seen before.
