Heavy rainfall throughout the day and night has triggered flash floods, inundating homes in Nan province. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued its first warning, highlighting the potential impact on several provinces.

The event occurred today, July 17, when a Facebook page named Nan released a video showing flash floods sweeping through houses in Ban Nam Sod, Thung Chang district, following continuous rain.

Another video shows a fast-flowing brown-red torrent, with a brief caption noting, “Due to several days of heavy rainfall, flash floods and sudden flooding have occurred in the low-lying areas of Nan province.”

The TMD’s announcement highlights the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain across Thailand, accompanied by strong winds in the upper Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

This warning, issued as Announcement No. 1 (181/2568), indicates that between July 19 and July 24, rainfall will intensify, particularly in Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Uttaradit, Tak, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Uthai Thani, Kanchanaburi, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong, and Phang Nga.

According to the announcement, a monsoon trough will pass over upper northern Thailand, northern Laos, and northern Vietnam. Combined with a strong southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, residents in affected areas should be cautious of severe rainfall and accumulated precipitation.

These conditions may lead to flash floods and water surges, especially in sloped areas near waterways and low-lying regions. It is advised to avoid travelling through areas with thunderstorms and roads prone to chronic flooding, particularly low-lying areas where short-term waterlogging may occur, reported KhaoSod.

In similar news, the TMD has released a weather alert forecasting heavy rain across 46 provinces, including Bangkok, where showers are expected to cover 70% of the city.

Residents are urged to stay alert for possible flash floods and landslides. Thunderstorms and intense rainfall are predicted in several areas of the northern, central, and eastern regions, with particular concern for provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, and Nan.
