Flashback Friday: Math, Manners, and more at the apple orchard

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – School doesn’t always have to take place in a classroom; sometimes it extends into the great outdoors. In this morning’s Flashback Friday, Keloland’s Rick Huffman takes us back to 1993 for a lesson on math and manners at a Sioux Falls apple orchard.

Hey, kids who has the best apples? “I do.”

What better atmosphere for educating kids than in an apple orchard? This field trip can yield answers to many mathematical problems; for instance, if you have three apples in the bag and you pick another, how many apples do you have? “I got three now, I got four.”

A trip to the orchard also teaches them good manners and other social skills.

“Who are you going to share with? My mom, my dad, my sister, and Mike. And Mike? Who’s Mike? He’s my grandpa.”

They learn about good nutrition, such as an apple or two a day…

“First, I’m going to eat one and then I’m going to eat the other one at the other day.”

And they learn a little about the apple business.

“We talk to them about all the kinds of apples we have, and how we grow them, and how to take care of them, and then we do have a petting zoo with about six different kinds of animals.”

And just in case you haven’t noticed the teachers are the only ones not picking apples. The kids will probably bring an apple to their teacher in the morning.
