Ford drivers warned to immediately return car over axle fault that makes it roll in park – notice will come August 18

FORD recalled over 103,000 trucks and warned drivers to return their cars immediately.

The American car company recalled thousands of its vehicles due to a faulty axle hub spline.

The axle hub bolts on Ford’s F-150 pickup trucks can cause the vehicle to roll away when the parking brake is not applied.

The faulty bolts may also cause the driver to lose control of the car.

“Both of these conditions can increase the risk of a crash,” the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration wrote in its recall notice.

A spokesperson for the company told CBS News that so far no accidents have been reported due to the malfunction.

The Department of Transportation warned F-150 drivers that the rear axle hub bolt may “fatigue and break.”

If it does, the axle hub splines could get damaged which would ultimately make the vehicle unsafe to drive.

“If the bolt breaks, customers may report a rattle noise,” the NHTSA reported.

Drivers who purchased the F-150 between January 2, 2023, and May 21, 2025, will be able to take their cars to a Ford or Lincoln dealership to have it fixed free of charge.

The drivers will also be notified via mail between August 18, 2025, and May 22, 2026, of the recall.

The official recall number is 25S82.

Ford’s latest recall comes after drivers were asked to hand back hundreds of thousands of vehicles earlier this summer.

The company recalled 700,000 cars over a malfunction that could cause a fire.

The manufacturer recalled its Bronco Sport model, made between 2021-2024, and its Escape models, made between 2020 and 2022.

The cars were being recalled due to a fuel leak risk from cracked fuel injectors.

How can I check if my car is part of a recall?

If you own a car that’s been recently recalled, you can easily check your VIN.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) makes it incredibly quick and easy for drivers to check and see if their vehicle is part of a recent (or past) recall.

The VIN checking tool also allows drivers to see whether or not the repair was completed within the last 15 years, making it an incredible tool for buyers of used cars.

All recalls initiated by the NHTSA mean free repairs for drivers, even if it’s an engine or a transmission replacement. If your VIN shows an active recall that has not been repaired, it’s important to make an appointment at your nearest dealership.

Here’s how to make an appointment for a recall:

  1. Look up your VIN using the NHTSA tool.
  2. Find out the recall number/ID from the manufacturer.
  3. Call your nearest dealership’s service center with the ID number handy, and mention you’d like to schedule an appointment to repair the recall. The repair can only be done at a dealership, as they’re authorized by the manufacturer to conduct the repair free of cost using genuine parts.
  4. Try to make the appointment as soon as possible.
  5. Once the repair is completed, the dealership will update the information associated with the VIN to reflect it’s been completed.

If left unrepaired, the fuel leak could cause a fire within the engine compartment.

To fix the fault, Ford dealers will provide an interim software upgrade to detect cracked injectors and reduce fire risk free of charge.

The company is still investigating long term solutions to the issue.

No injuries have been reported due to the issue, according to the NHTSA.

Ford anticipates that the recall will result in a $750 million financial impact for its second quarter.

The hundreds of thousands of cars being recalled pushed Ford to the top of the list of the most recalls issued by any carmaker within a single calendar year.

The company has now issued 88 safety recalls, surpassing all other brands, The Wall Street Journal reported.
