While Fox NFL Sunday already has an incredibly advanced set, Fox NFL Kickoff is lagging a bit behind.

That won’t be the case anymore, as Fox’s Stage B received a major overhaul in the offseason.

Stage B hasn’t been improved since its debut in 2013, but now has 54 million LED lights and double the amount of space on its video walls than Fox NFL Sunday’s Stage A.

The set also now has an interactive and responsive backdrop as well.

Colin Cowherd’s show, The Herd, will be the first live show to use the new studio before Fox NFL Kickoff gets in on 11am on Sunday.

Stage B will also host some college football, MLB postseason, and FIFA World Cup coverage.

“We really see the benefits of LED and what you can do to tell stories and enhance a show and change things regularly,” Zac Fields, Fox Sports SVP/Graphic Tech & Innovation, said.

“We realized one of the big things coming off of Stage A was, as grand as our LED volume was, if you want people to be able to move around and show more relationship shots, it really needed to be bigger.

“So this one, this LED volume, is twice the size, which gives it a whole other dimension into doing a show.”

Fields said that the studio uses 36 rendering engines to power the LED walls.

The network will also be able to superimpose augmented reality graphics on the walls.

“Those engines display the graphics and work in concert with the cameras that are calibrated so that whatever perspective the camera sees, the walls react to essentially create that illusion that that’s where you are,” Fields said.

The Fox NFL Kickoff crew used to have to move to different parts of the set to be in different settings.

Now, the set will move around for them to suit their needs.

“One of the core approaches was to make sure that, not only is there this grand space, but there’s a lot of depth, and everything is I wouldn’t say modular, but the set itself has the ability to come alive,” Fields said.

“So you might see walls move. You might see pieces of the set that actually turn into graphics, almost like kinetic architecture, and that’s one thing that we’re looking forward to that’s quite different.”

Stage B’s redesign was undertaken by New Zealand firm Architecture van Brandenburg.

The same firm did the work on Fox’s Stage A.
