Highway police in central Thailand arrested a fugitive wanted for murder, shootings and theft after years on the run, following a routine checkpoint stop.
The Central Investigation Bureau confirmed that highway police arrested the suspect, a Thai national named Harris, at a traffic checkpoint on Rama II Road in Pak Tho District. Officers discovered he was wanted under an arrest warrant issued by the Phatthalung Court. He was read his rights and taken to Konghra Police Station in Phatthalung for further proceedings.
Police revealed Harris’s criminal history stretches back more than a decade. In 2012, he was accused of gunning down a 53 year old man in Takhmod district, Phatthalung. Seven spent 5.56mm cartridges were found at the crime scene. Harris fled after the killing and was placed on a nationwide wanted list.
His violent streak continued in 2022 in Surat Thani, when he opened fire at a rival’s car during a traffic light stand-off before giving chase. Though no one was injured, police said the attack caused panic among bystanders and victims.
That same year, Harris and accomplices struck again in Kong Ra district, Phatthalung, smashing into a mobile phone shop and stealing 37 devices worth more than 146,000 baht. Investigators later traced several of the stolen phones being sold and activated in Surat Thani, which led to further arrest warrants being issued.
During yesterday’s (September 22) arrest, officers stressed the significance of finally bringing him in.
“This man has a long history of violent and serious crimes. His capture will bring relief to communities in the South.”
The arrest was led by Police Lieutenant General Jiraphop Phuridet, Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, working with senior officers from the Highway Police Division.
Harris now faces charges of nighttime theft, damaging or bypassing barriers, and receiving stolen property, alongside the earlier cases of murder and attempted shootings, reported The Phuket News.
Police said investigations remain ongoing as they prepare to prosecute him on multiple counts, vowing to dismantle any networks still linked to his crimes.
