Gas station agrees to pay $970 cash settlement to Americans from $12m pot – and you just need receipts to claim

AMERICANS will be automatically paid $970 from a massive $12 million class action lawsuit.

The gas station chain Speedway has agreed to pay out the cash over claims that it violated privacy laws in the state of Illinois.

Speedway has not admitted to any wrongdoing in this case, but is paying out $12,122,775 to settle the claims against it.

According to the lawsuit, Speedway broke the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA).

BIPA is a state law that passed in 2008 that regulates how companies use, collect and store biometric data like fingerprints and facial scans.

Plaintiffs argue that Speedway broke BIPA by requiring employees to scan their fingerprints to clock in and out of work.

Speedway allegedly failed to get the necessary consent required before collecting and storing this data.

This lawsuit benefits those who used a finger scanner to clock in or out of work while working for a Speedway in Illinois between September 1, 2012 and November 1, 2017.

EQUAL SHARE

Class members are eligible to receive an equal share of the settlement fund.

The settlement website estimates that each person will be paid $970, but the actual amount is subject to pro rata, or proportional, conditions.

This means that the more people that successfully file a claim, the less each person will be paid equally.

Claimants must provide a form of proof that they used a fingerprint scanner when working at an Illinois Speedway during the allotted time period.

This could be something like a work order or credit card statement to prove your employment status.

DATES TO KNOW

This settlement does not require a claimant to fill in a form in order to receive financial compensation.

As long as someone has not excluded themselves from the class pool, they will receive their payment automatically if they are eligible.

The deadline to exclude yourself passed on September 16, 2025.

What’s a class-action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or ‘classes,’ a way to band together in court.

These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.

When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.

Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.

These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination, or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.

While it is not known when the payments will be sent out, the final approval hearing is set for October 21, 2025.

POPPI PAY

In a separate case, Americans can also claim from an $8.9 million lawsuit from the drinks company Poppi, despite it not admitting to any wrongdoing.

The company has been hit with claims that it incorrectly advertised its drinks as “gut healthy”.

Plaintiffs say that the drinks contain too much sugar and not enough prebiotics for this claim to be true.

Prebiotics are food compounds that encourage the production of beneficial microorganisms in a person’s gut.

The settlement benefits those who bought any Poppi flavor between January 23, 2020, and July 18, 2025.

If someone can provide proof of purchase, they can earn up to $0.75 per single can, $3 per four-pack, $6 per eight-pack and $9 per 12- or 15-pack.

Those who are unable to provide proof of purchase can only earn up to $16 from the lawsuit.

The deadline to claim is set for September 26 and the final hearing for November 20.
