Tempers flared during a game between Baldwin High School and Elizabeth Forward High School last week.
A Baldwin receiver and Elizabeth Forward defender grappled as the wideout looked to break coverage.
In the tussle, the receiver had his helmet ripped off as he fell to the turf.
Whilst down on the floor, the defender then launched a punch at his opponent’s head.
The play was caught on video and quickly went viral on X, with thousands condemning the unnecessary swipe.
“Not much of a class act… Disgusting behavior,” wrote one viewer.
“If he was on my team, he wouldn’t be for long. Cheap shot from behind, with the guys helmet off,” raged another.
“Throw him out permanently,” demanded a third.
“Slaps the kid then basically runs away. Hard to believe a coach didn’t run on to the field and drag him off,” commented a fourth.
The clip has since been viewed over 2.5 million times on social media.
Landon Honick later took to X to declare he was the player in the video – but “harbored no anger” towards his opponent.
“My name is Landon Honick and I’m the player in this video who was hit in the face last night,” the teenager wrote on X.
“There is no room for this type of activity in sports and this unacceptable.
“I’ve had many people reach out to me to see if I am ok.

“I just want everyone to know I am fine and I harbor no anger.
“I would like to wish Baldwin football the best of luck the rest of the season.”
Baldwin coach Dana Brown Jr. called his player’s actions “unacceptable” in a post on social media.
‘It does not reflect the values of our program or what we teach as coaches and mentors,” he wrote.
“Such conduct has no place in the game, and it was a selfish act that will carry consequences.”
