Horror moment boy is threatened with machete on bus weeks after refugee Iryna Zarutska killed in front of passengers

A TERRIFYING video has captured the moment a group of violent teens assaulted a bus driver with pepper spray while one boy menacingly waved a massive machete.

It’s just the latest in a disturbing string of public transit disasters that have left commuters fearing for their lives every time they board a train.

On September 12, an after-school argument in New York City turned violent when one teen whipped out a machete and started chasing another boy, witnesses told Nexstar affiliate PIX11.

The boy raced from the school yard into a nearby Metropolitan Transit Authority bus as the sword-wielding teen and others ran in behind him, according to a now-viral video shared in a residents’ association Facebook group.

The student being chased sprinted out of another entrance and was quickly followed by the driver who tried to break up the fight.

The 54-year-old man held up his arms while the aggressive teen menacingly puffed his chest and held up the machete toward the boy.

Meanwhile, a girl who appeared to be with the attacker pointed her phone, apparently recording the incident, and yelled “ha ha!” toward the boy and driver.

The machete-wielding teen eventually backed away, but the girl rushed toward the driver and boy and sprayed mace at him before the entire group ran down the street.

A 15-year-old male was arrested and accused of taking part in the knife and pepper-spray attack on Monday, and investigators are still looking for another suspect, amNY reported.

Alex Kemp, the vice president of a bus driver union, said this is just one of many examples of how transit workers put their lives at risk to protect passengers.

“The end of your life could be waiting around the corner at the next stop,” he told PIX11.

The bus attack comes just weeks after Ukrainian immigrant Iryna Zarutska, 23, was violently stabbed to death during her train ride commute after work as horrified passengers watched on.

On August 22, repeat felon Decarlos Brown Jr, 34, allegedly waited four minutes after Zarutska sat down before standing up and plunging a knife into her neck as they rode a train in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Bone-chilling surveillance footage captured the moment confused passengers could be seen glancing over during the violent act before looking back down at their phones.

The attacker was recorded pacing down the train as blood dripped from his weapon for seconds before commuters eventually realized what happened and rushed toward Zarutska.

The immigrant slumped over in her chair and died before first responders could make it to the scene.

PUBLIC TRANSIT FEARS

These acts of violence are just the latest in a disturbing string of attacks that unfolded as passengers were trapped in moving trains and buses.

On May 1, 2023, veteran Daniel Penny put Jordan Neely into a chokehold after Neely reportedly acted erratically and threatened violence while inside a New York City subway car.

Neely had been screaming that he was ready to die after demanding money when Penny restrained him with the help of two other passengers.

After being held down, Neely went unresponsive and was later declared dead.

Neely had been arrested 42 times and was accused of assaulting women three different times between 2019 and 2021 when he died.

Penny was charged with manslaughter over the death, but a jury ultimately found him not guilty in December 2024.

ELDERLY WOMAN KILLED

Meanwhile in July 2023, a 74-year-old woman was killed after she was pushed into an oncoming train in San Francisco, California.

Corazon Dandan was heading home after working the night shift when homeless man Trevor Belmont, 49, allegedly shoved her into an oncoming train.

She struck her head on the car before falling backwards onto the platform.

Belmont had previously been banned from the Bay Area Rapid Transit over fare evasion and has been arrested 27 times over the past two decades.

He’s been charged with murder, and Dandan’s family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against BART calling for safer train platforms.

PASSENGERS ATTACKED

In Los Angeles, a man was left fighting for his life after he was stabbed as he rode a bus in the middle of the day on September 3.

The victim was embroiled in an argument with Logan Dunn, 23, when Dunn allegedly whipped out a pocket knife and stabbed him three times in the neck.

Horrified witnesses described using their clothes to try and sop up the blood that was pouring out from the horrific wounds, KNBC reported.

It’s unclear whether Dunn has been arrested.

In Boston, a 74-year-old man was stabbed in the neck while riding a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority bus in September 2024.

Maalik Abdur-Rasheed was arguing with the elderly man when he lunged at him with a knife, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

The victim was taken to the hospital with devastating injuries, and Abdur-Rasheed was taken into custody.

The suspect has been charged with assault with the intent to murder, and is being held without bail.

This was the second time in 15 months that Abdur-Rasheed had been accused and charged with stabbing a stranger, The Boston Globe reported.
