Cops were called to the scene following reports that human remains had been found at the popular beach.
One witness told The Scottish Sun: “I was walking along the beach early on Tuesday morning when I came across a disembodied leg.
“It was buried under some seaweed. There was no flesh left on it. It was just a bone with the sock and shoe still on it.
“There were maggots crawling all over it. ”
Police are continuing to probe the incident in order to establish the full circumstances.
It is not yet known whether the remains belong to a man or woman, or how long they may have been in the water.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 10.45am on Tuesday, 10 June, 2025, we received a report that human remains had been discovered on Prestwick Beach.
