I found Heisman Trophy winner’s treasured jacket tucked in my cupboard – now I’ve given it back after 32 years

FORMER quarterback Doug Flutie was reunited with a treasured item of clothing after three decades.

Flutie, 62, is a legend at Boston College and even has a statue outside their stadium.

He won the Heisman Trophy in 1984 and guided Boston College to victory in the Cotton Bowl Classic.

But his special jacket from that game went missing.

And the moment it was returned by a woman from New England was captured by NBC Boston.

Pat McCarthy had the jacket after her son came home from a party with it in 1993.

She finally got the opportunity to return the coat last month.

Flutie was honored by the Brockton Rox baseball team with a special night to help raise money for his charity.

He ran into McCarthy and a reporter from NBC Boston.

And the former quarterback was surprised with the Cotton Bowl jacket.

McCarthy revealed the story about how her son came home from a party with the jacket.

She told Flutie, “I found it and I said, ‘Oh, that doesn’t belong to us.’

“So I put it in that bag and I’ve been trying to figure out how to get it to him without giving it to someone else to give to him.

“I wanted to be the one to give it to him to make sure he got it.

“I’ve had it all these years.

“When I saw he was going to be here, I said, ‘Our perfect opportunity.’”

Flutie played 12 years in the NFL after his career with the Chicago Bears, New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills and San Diego Chargers.

He was considered by some to be too small to play in the league at 5ft 10ins.

The quarterback was also a Comeback Player of the Year and Pro Bowl star.

And he had a hugely successful time in the CFL, winning the Grey Cup three times.

Flutie was also a six-time CFL Most Outstanding Player with the BC Lions, Calgary Stampedes and Toronto Argonauts.

And he is a legend at Boston College with his own statue and number retired.
