With less than 40 games to go, an MLB franchise received brutal news concerning one of its star pitchers.
Ace Zach Wheeler is suffering from a “right upper extremity blood clot” and could be out for a lengthy time as he receives medical attention.
The Phillies’ doctors are planning for Wheeler to undergo more testing this week.
If Wheeler needs more serious treatment, he could be placed on the 60-day injury list and miss even more time.
Philly’s head athletic trainer, Paul Buchheit, confirmed that the clot is located in Wheeler’s throwing shoulder.
A blood clot is a rare diagnosis for a healthy and active man with no underlying illness or previous medical issues.
However, it has been reported that a clot can be caused by a repetitive arm motion, which is something that pitcher Wheeler does each day during a 162-game season.
Symptoms of the clot include swelling and significant pain in the area.
Phillies players have shared their concern about Wheeler.
“It’s obviously scary. … Obviously we’re praying for him, trying to keep in contact with him,” fellow starting pitcher Taijuan Walker said.
“But I know that he knows we’re all here for him.”
Sugger and MVP candidate Kyle Schwarber said, “I shot him a text.
“Sounded like everything was getting the tests done and things like that.
“It’s a scary situation, right? … Just want to get hi back in there and hear from him.

Wheeler has a 69-37 record and averaged a 2.91 ERA in his five-plus seasons with the Phillies[/caption]
“Hopefully it’s not anything too serious.
“I don’t know what the prognosis is going to be or what they’re going to have to do.
“I don’t know if it’s surgery … But get him in here and get him healthy. I think that’s the biggest thing.”
The 35-year-old initially had a start earlier this month pushed back due to shoulder soreness before making two start appearances.

However, Wheeler noticed a decrease in his pitching velocity and only threw five innings last Friday night against the Washington Nationals.
No definitive prognosis has been made, and doctors don’t believe the clot caused his previous shoulder soreness.
Wheeler has been a star pitcher for the Phillies since 2020.
He has a 69-37 record and averaged a 2.91 ERA in his Philly tenure.

This season, Wheeler has a 10-5 record and a 2.71 ERA.
The Phillies are currently 71-53 and have a five-game division lead over the rival New York Mets.
