Just days until Costco will close down all 624 locations for 24 hours forcing rival Sam’s Club to scoop up business

RETAIL giant Costco is planning a nationwide shutdown in just days, temporarily closing all 624 warehouses for a 24 hour period.

As the warehouse club turns off the lights at its US stores, it will give rival Sam’s Club the prime opportunity to scoop up business.

Costco is one of the most successful retailers in the country due to a variety of factors, from its affordable food court offerings and bulk buys to its friendly customer service and beloved Kirkland Signature products.

The warehouse club rakes in more and more money each year as its member count ticks upwards.

Costco’s revenue for the twelve months ending on May 31 was a whopping $268.78 billion, a nearly 6% increase from the same time in 2024.

The beloved retailer outranks Sam’s Club as the most popular membership-based warehouse club in the country, holding roughly 62% of the market in 2022, versus its rival at 31%, per a CFRA report.

Generating significantly more net sales than its competitor, Costco has more leeway to temporarily shut down its hundreds of US stores – a costly move considering that Costco makes roughly $730 million in revenue each day.

The retail giant is planning to close down all 624 of its locations for the entire day on Independence Day, while Sam’s Club is plotting to merely close two hours early.

In addition to the Fourth of July, Costco temporarily closes on the following US holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Easter Sunday
  • Memorial Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

On the other hand, Sam’s Club shuts its doors on New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

Rather than closing for the entire day and losing out on revenue, Sam’s Club shuts down a little early on the other holidays, including Memorial Day, Labor Day, and the Fourth of July.

DAY OF DISRUPTIONS

Americans should plan ahead for the Fourth of July – one of 11 federal US holidays – as a number of services will experience disruption when the day rolls around.

For example, USPS, UPS, and FedEx will not deliver regular mail or packages on Independence Day.

Major banks will also shut down for the day, and your trash pickup may be impacted as well.

The retail sector will not be heavily impacted by the upcoming holiday, with many stores, including Walmart and Target, planning to operate as normal on July 4.

Federal Holidays

There are 11 federal holidays. Here are the dates for 2025:

  • New Year’s Day: January 1, 2025
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 20, 2025
  • Presidents’ Day: February 17, 2025
  • Memorial Day: May 26, 2025
  • Juneteenth: June 19, 2025
  • Independence Day: July 4, 2025
  • Labor Day: September 1, 2025
  • Columbus Day: October 13, 2025
  • Veterans Day: November 11, 2025
  • Thanksgiving Day: November 27, 2025
  • Christmas Day: December 25, 2025

Other popular retailers that will maintain their regular hours on Independence Day include:

  • Albertsons
  • Best Buy
  • Big Lots
  • BJ’s Wholesale Club
  • CVS
  • Kohl’s
  • Dollar General
  • JCPenney
  • Lowe’s
  • Macy’s
  • Publix

Other popular spots may see their hours impacted by the upcoming holiday.

For example, some Starbucks stores may adjust their hours on the Fourth of July while others may close for the day.

Trader Joe’s will likewise tweak its schedule, with all stores expected to close early at 5 pm.

Although the closures for Independence Day are temporary, a number of retailers are shutting down for good amid industry wide challenges.

For example, a beloved retailer is permanently closing down another popular mall location as part of a summertime slaughter.

Plus, a discount retailer confirmed it’s closing five locations just days after its parent company Kroger slashed 60.
