The NFL‘s teams are forced to trim their rosters from 90 players to 53 ahead of Tuesday’s 4:00 pm ET deadline.
And the Chiefs turned heads with the release of a veteran.
Early Tuesday morning, it was reported that Kansas City plans to cut safety Mike Edwards, per NFL Network.
Edwards returned to the Chiefs earlier in the offseason as the 29-year-old was thought to be a veteran presence in the secondary.
He played with the Chiefs in the 2023 season, where the team beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 58.
However, Edwards suffered a hamstring injury during the preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.
He didn’t play in last Friday’s preseason finale versus the Chicago Bears.
Edwards entered the NFL in 2019 as a Tampa Bay Buccaneers third-round pick.
He won a Super Bowl against the Chiefs in his second season.
Edwards signed with the Chiefs in 2023 and started five games that season for the eventual Super Bowl champions.
In Week 18 of that season, he returned a fumble 97 yards for a touchdown.
Last campaign, he started the year with the Buffalo Bills before returning to the Bucs.
In 83 NFL games, he has eight career interceptions, three of which he returned for scores.
The Chiefs will now work with four safeties: Bryan Cook, Jaden Hicks, Chamarri Conner, and Chris Roland-Wallace.

It’s possible the team could also keep undrafted rookie Kevin Knowles on the final roster.
He blocked an extra-point attempt on Friday in the preseason finale.
The decision to release Edwards will cost the Chiefs just $500,000 in dead money, per OverTheCap.
