Kansas City Chiefs star breaks down in tears about late mother after signing record $94 million contract

TREY Smith couldn’t contain his emotions after signing an extension with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Smith signed a four-year, $94 million deal with the Chiefs last week.

The new contract makes smith the third-highest paid guard in the league by total contract value and highest-paid by annual value.

Smith will make $23.5 million per season on his new deal.

The guard spoke about his new deal to the media at training camp and started to break down in tears.

He spoke about a promise he made to his mother when she died when he was 15 years old.

“I lost my mom when I was 15,” Smith said.

“I made two promises to her. That I would get my degree and play in the NFL.

“I didn’t promise her I’d be the highest paid, but I made a promise man.

“They sacrificed so much for me to be here. So much. So to share that moment… it was special, bro. It was special.”

Smith said he was at the barber shop when he found out about his new contract.

The Chiefs initially placed the franchise tag on him, but were able to work out an extension before last week’s July 15 deadline.

It was a no-brainer to extend Smith, who was one of the best guards in the NFL not only last season but in his entire four-year career.

He has only missed one game in his career so far.

Last season, Smith only allowed one-and-a-half sacks while starting every single game.

Andy Reid is thrilled to have his guard sticking around for a while, and praised the Chiefs’ front office for getting the deal done.

“It’s an ongoing thing. You’ve got to have a good feel [and] a good plan for the future as you do it…

“He’s an aggressive personality on the field — a teddy bear off the field — but he brings it every game.”

The Chiefs are looking to bounce back from their Super Bowl loss against the Philadelphia Eagles this season.
