Mariska married SVU guest-star Peter Hermann, who plays attorney Trevor Langan, in 2004.
The pair now share three children together.
They welcomed their first child in 2006, while adopting a further two in 2011.
Mariska recently directed HBO documentary My Mom Jayne – which examined the life of her late mother, Jayne Mansfield.
Jayne, who died in 1967, was an actress and sex symbol during the 1950s and early 1960s.
In the documentary, Mariska confirmed long-standing rumors that former Las Vegas entertainer Nelson Sardelli is her biological father,
Over the past two decades, she achieved worldwide fame for her long-running role as Olivia Benson.
Her character has risen from Junior Detective to eventually the role of NYPD Captain.
Last year, Mariska halted production after a little girl mistook her for an actual cop.
She was stopped by the youngster while on set filming one of the last episodes of Season 25.
Being in her police officer badge, the girl thought she was a real cop.
She did not see the cameras, film crew, or other actors on set, including Ice-T, as she was visibly upset.
The little girl was separated from her mom in the Anne Loftus Playground in Fort Tryon Park, a source told People.
So, she went to Mariska for help.
Being a mother herself, the actress agreed to help and stopped production for 20 minutes to help the mother and daughter find each other.
They eventually did and Mariska consoled them both before returning to work.
Olivia Benson became the longest-running character on a primetime drama series in January 2024 when SVU aired its historic 25th season on NBC.
Mariska spoke with People at the time about the show’s run and her character.
She said: “We’ve been on a parallel journey. There’s a thing: WWOBD, ‘What would Olivia Benson do?’ The fans would always talk about it, and one day it hit me.”
“I also have those moments where I’ve sort of slipped into her. If there’s a crisis, I just take over and lead like that.
“Being strong and fearless. It’s sort of this perfect feminist story.”
