Ledbetter murder trial is on schedule

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Jimmie Ledbetter Jr.’s attorneys said his trial is on schedule to begin in October.

Ledbetter Jr. is accused of murdering Angie Scholl last October.

According to court documents, the victim had filed for divorce and changed the locks to her Sioux Falls home just days before her death. The day after the crime, Ledbetter started a GoFundMe account to raise money for Scholl’s funeral.

In court Tuesday morning, Ledbetter told the judge he had concerns about communication and questioned if his attorneys had enough time for his case.

He told the judge, “I have one opportunity to prove any innocence.”

The judge told Ledbetter that a good attorney is going to be busy and ensured him they were prepared. The judge warned Ledbetter that changing attorneys would delay the trial by about six months, so Ledbetter decided to move forward with his current legal counsel.

The defense requested a deadline be set for filing all motions. The judge approved that request and set a motions hearing for October 2nd. All motions must be filed at least a week before that date.

The defense requested a long-form questionnaire to be sent to jurors in an effort to speed up the jury trial process. The judge approved the request.

In 2018, KELOLAND News spoke with Ledbetter about an event he put together to raise awareness about domestic violence.

“I would like to see the courts be stiffer when you see the abuse happen. Women are losing their faith with the courts,” Ledbetter said in 2018.

The trial is scheduled to start on October 23rd.
