A PROMINENT retailer is closing down another location in just days as part of a larger re-organization plan.
The chain currently has over 8,500 stores nationwide, but after an announcement at the end of last year, that number is dwindling.

At least, for Wisconsin consumers it is, as a Walgreens in downtown Milwaukee is closing its doors for good, per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The last day of operation is set in just days on July 21, with the front end of the store at 275 West Wisconsin Avenue still remaining open afterward for an unspecified amount of time.
Two others will also close in the area in the following weeks.
They include the Walgreens at 6441 North 76th Street in Milwaukee, which actually shuttered on July 1, but had a section remain open until July 28.
The entire store at 819 Memorial Drive in Racine, about 30 miles south of downtown Milwaukee, will close on August 5.
Prescriptions will automatically be transferred to customers’ next nearest Walgreens and they will be notified where by mail, along with getting a free 90-day delivery service for the inconvenience.
“It is never an easy decision to close a store, and we know how important they are to the communities we serve and therefore do everything possible to improve their performance,” Walgreens wrote in a statement to the outlet.
“When closures are necessary, we work in partnership with community stakeholders to minimize customer disruptions.”
PLAN IN MOTION
Walgreens also emphasized that the three shutdowns are part of its larger “turnaround” plans.
“We will continue to execute our previously announced turnaround plan to stabilize our retail pharmacy operations, which includes our store footprint optimization program,” the statement continued.
The $1 billion cost-cutting program that will see around 1,200 Walgreens stores removed from the map was confirmed by Walgreens Boots Alliance CEO Tim Wentworth in October.
Wentworth seeks to bring back the company’s market value, which was at a high in 2015 of $100 billion.
At the end of 2024, it was only $7.5 billion, a considerable decrease.
“We recognize where we are is a turnaround,” the CEO said during an earnings call last summer.

MOVING FORWARD
Wentworth also revealed that about 25% of Walgreens stores were “not currently contributing to our long-term strategy.”
That’s why the 1,200, around 13% of the retailer’s footprint, is getting the axe, with 500 to be shuttered by the end of this year.
The CEO also emphasized that Walgreens would come out stronger after trimming the underperforming locations.
“When you look at our stores, the stores that were not on the closure list, we see those stores being materially stronger, still not where they need to be, but materially stronger than the stores that we’re closing,” he told investors.
Walgreens shares were also up about 35% after the first fiscal quarter of the year amid the closures, per USA Today.
Other top competitors are also conducting closures as experts fear of “pharmacy deserts” for Americans.
Rite Aid filed for its second bankruptcy in May and is also closing over 1,000 stores this year.
CVS is also finishing up its multi-year initiative with a 900 store closure goal and shuttered 23 in the same state recently.
