Devotees gathered at a temple in Nakhon Pathom yesterday to seek blessings and lucky numbers as they prepare for the upcoming national lottery draw.

Wat Klang Bang Phra in Nakhon Pathom has once again become a magnet for lottery hopefuls, as devotees gathered yesterday, September 29, to pay respects and seek good fortune from the temple’s revered figures.

At the centre of the rituals is the 30-metre-tall Buddha statue, Luang Por Somwang, where worshippers offer incense, candles, and flowers while performing blessings and lottery rituals. Many also follow the forehead inscription practice, a tradition passed down from the late abbot Luang Por Phut, whose preserved body rests in a glass coffin inside the temple hall.

Nearby, within the Chulamanee Viharn, sits the ancient statue of Thao Wessuwan, gifted decades ago by the respected monk Luang Por Rung. Standing over 2 metres tall, the blackened cement figure is adorned with red amulets tied by worshippers seeking protection and prosperity.

Faithful visitors leave offerings of seven-colour incense sticks—red, yellow, pink, green, orange, blue, and purple—representing their day of birth, with the hope of drawing good luck. Many devotees believe Thao Wessuwan grants blessings to those who pray sincerely.

Among those seeking fortune was 61 year old Bangkok resident Nittaya Phothikun, who visited the temple with her daughter to pray for health and wealth. After tying a red cloth to Thao Wessuwan’s mace, she drew the number 176 from a jar.

“I was lucky before when I came here, so I hope this number brings me luck again.”

Vendors have also set up stalls around the temple, selling lottery tickets featuring numbers drawn from rituals, while others offer amulets and sacred charms tied to the temple’s traditions, reported KhaoSod.

For many, the visit is not just about chance but also about spiritual guidance. Worshippers believe that honouring Luang Por Somwang and Thao Wessuwan will bring blessings for health, family harmony, and good fortune.
