On the social media platform Reddit, a renter needed answers after their toilet tank had corroded from hard water.

After finding that the float arm had snapped, it was fixed by the landlord, but the renter was left with a $1,200 water bill.

The caption of the post says: We were not home for half of the month and we discovered upon return from our vacation that the plumbing inside our toilet tank had corroded from hard water and the float arm snapped in half.

“I stopped it from running and contacted the landlord right away.

“They came and fixed it. But now my water bill is $1200. Am I responsible for this?

“What’s the next step here? Do I contact my landlord about the bill or start with the water company? Thanks.”

The water bill claims that 5,000 gallons of water was used daily.

REST ASSURED

In the comments of the post, people were quick to offer their advice, urging that there has to be an issue with the reading.

One person assured: “A broken toilet did not use 5,000 gal of water a day.

“A few hundred gallons, sure. 5000 gallons, no way. The building would’ve floated away.

“That’s over 40,000 lbs of water every day. Think about that. You think that building is surviving four African elephants worth of water gushing through it?

“Every day?! No way. Not happening. There’s either another very serious issue, or someone at the water company misplaced a decimal point.”

Another wrote: “I work for a water company, contact them about the increased usage, they’ll compare it to other months.

“Let them know you found a leak and got it repaired and offer to send proof of repair (invoice / bill from plumber) and they’ll likely reduce it to within a normal range of your typical bills.”

And a third added: “Most water companies will do a one time leak bill forgiveness if you can prove that you fixed the leak.

“Contact the water company and ask them if they have a program like this.”

HIGH WATER BILLS

As others pointed out in the thread, the result could depend on where the person lives.

If there was a leak, ultimately someone has to pay for it, and it could be difficult to get the water company to write it off.

Payment plans are normally available for those who cannot pay in a lump sum, however.

The township might pay for the cost if certain criteria is met, so this could be an option.

How sympathetic the water company is will also make a big difference.

If the company decides there was an issue, they could lower the amount owed.
