McDonald’s is taking strides to lure in cost-conscious consumers amid declining sales.
The chain’s US same-store sales were down 3.6% in the first quarter of 2025 – the largest decline in its domestic market since the pandemic in 2020.
Some of the company’s efforts to reverse its downward trend include bringing back popular items like the Snack Wrap and McCrispy strips as well as rolling out new menu items such as the Daily Double burger and kids’ meals for adults called McDonaldland Meals.
McDonald’s has likewise launched new value menus and offers for customers on a budget, confirming the return date for its beloved Extra Value Meals in a Tuesday press release.
The company will be launching eight discounted meals – which include breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings – across its US franchises beginning on Monday, September 8:
- Sausage McMuffin with Egg
- Sausage Egg & Cheese McGriddles
- Egg McMuffin
- Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit
- Big Mac
- 10-piece Chicken McNuggets
- Any variety Quarter Pounder burger (Original, Bacon, or Deluxe)
- Any variety McCrispy Sandwich (Original, Deluxe, or Spicy Deluxe)
The meal options, returning for the first time since 2019, will save diners 15% compared to buying the entrée, french fries, and a beverage on their own.
“McDonald’s USA is laser-focused on delivering value and affordability for our customers, and I’m incredibly proud of how our franchisees and teams continue to step up to make it a reality,” said Joe Erlinger, President of McDonald’s USA, in the press release.
“From the $5 Meal Deal to McValue and now Extra Value Meals, we’re sending a clear message: we’re here for our customers. McDonald’s will always be a place where you can get the food you love at a price that fits your life.”
DEALS ON DEALS
To celebrate the nationwide return of the Extra Value Meals after six years, the fast food chain is offering discounts on two of the most popular ones for a limited time.
Foodies will be able to start their morning with a Sausage McMuffin with Egg meal, which includes Hash Browns and a small coffee, for just $5.
McDonald’s will also serve up its Big Mac meal, which comes with medium fries and a medium soft drink, for $8.
The fast food giant promised to deliver even more value in the coming months.
“When it comes to bringing more value and affordability to fans, we’re just getting started,” the company said in the press release.
Fans can look forward to even more affordable Extra Value Meals in the near future, including $5 Sausage, Egg and Cheese McGriddles and 10-piece Chicken McNuggets Meals for $8 in November.
“Bringing back Extra Value Meals reflects the company and franchisees’ shared commitment to offering everyday affordable prices,” said Danielle Marasco, owner/operator of McDonald’s of Laredo, Texas, in the press release.
“We’re working together to keep the menu items our customers love affordable for everyone in the communities we serve.”
McDonald’s recent efforts to appease budget-weary diners come in the wake of similar moves earlier this year.
For example, the fast food giant debuted its new McValue menu category back in January as part of its comeback strategy, which includes offers such as a “Buy One, Add One for $1” option for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
At the same time, McDonald’s rolled out deals on its app to encourage use of the platform, including free medium fries with a $1 purchase every Friday this year as well as a free McCrispy chicken sandwich for new app users.
The company also announced at the time that its local franchisees were hosting their own special discounts on menu items like the McGriddle in addition to app-only promos like 20% off $10 or more.
As fast foodies look to save money when eating out, more and more are exploiting a secret loophole with kids’ meals – now 50% of US adults are taking the “smart option.”
Meanwhile, McDonald’s new rule tacking on extra charges is being slammed by fans, who say it’s “getting out of hand.”
