Mental health in focus for Compass Center’s ‘Laziest Race’

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — An unorthodox “race” of sorts is set for Saturday in Sioux Falls.

It’s dubbed “South Dakota’s Laziest Race,” and its distance is only 0.3 miles. But it’s really about peace of mind and empowerment. Participants can run, walk or pick the speed that suits them… and that’s the point.

“In our mission, people choose to heal at their own pace,” said Sydney Bartunek, chief development and communications officer with The Compass Center. “And so it’s really a nod to that. And you get to choose your journey, your healing journey, and we’ll help you along the way. Our whole mission is to navigate the healing journey for those affected by sexual, relational and family trauma.”

The event is a fundraiser for The Compass Center, a local nonprofit which supports survivors. Vendors and food trucks will be on hand, and The 437 Project will have a presence at the event, too. The 437 Project raises money for the Helpline Center, a nonprofit that connects people with mental health resources. Tony Goettsch of Sioux Falls is running across South Dakota in The 437 Project’s annual relay in September.

“I’m really excited to do this, and anyone stops me and asks me about it, I’m more than willing to spend a few minutes, or more than a few minutes, talking to them about it,” Goettsch said about The 437 Project.

The 437 Project’s mission to put a spotlight on mental health makes for a logical partnership with The Compass Center at Saturday’s event.

“Our partners are coming alongside us to also support mental health in our community and across the state,” Bartunek said. “And I think that really is showing up with our partnership with The 437 Project.”

Registration for “South Dakota’s Laziest Race” is $50. It will take place at JJ’s Wine, Spirits & Cigars in southern Sioux Falls at 10:00 a.m. Saturday. KELOLAND’s Dan Santella will join Goettsch among the 12 runners crossing the state on foot in 2025, and just like in 2024 when he was one of the runners, Santella will take viewers and readers along on the journey.
