Miami Dolphins lose star running back to last-minute surgery just days before start of NFL season

THE Miami Dolphins have been dealt a major blow just days before the start of the NFL season.

Star running back Jaylen Wright has been ruled out after undergoing last-minute surgery.

Wright, 22, has had an operation on his leg on Thursday night following an injury earlier in the week.

The procedure was confirmed by head coach Mike McDaniel as he claimed it was just a “small” one.

He also played down fears that Wright would miss the entire NFL season but would miss Week 1.

He said: “It’s not even close to season-ending, but it will take some time.”

The running back was re-signed by the Dolphins, but they have now added Jamycal Hasty.

He had originally joined the Dolphins during the 2024 NFL Draft as the 120th pick in the 4th round.

He rushed for 69 yards while at the New England Patriots last season.

McDaniel is fully aware of the 205-pound star as they worked together at the San Francisco 49ers.

Hasty has now been added to the Dolphins’ practice squad.

It is not all bad news for the team as Tyreek Hill could be back in contention to face the Indianapolis Colts on September 7.

McDaniel, 42, is confident that the wide receiver will be fit to play.

He said: “He’ll do some stuff today but we were making sure he had no setbacks for next week.

“It looks great.”

Hill, 31, joined the Dolphins back in 2021 after being traded in from the Kansas City Chiefs.

He has established himself as one of the team’s most important offensive players.

There had been suggestions that he had asked for a move away this summer but they were denied by general manager Chris Grier.

McDaniel has also spoken about the future of veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas.

He has insisted that the former Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers star needs to earn his spot to increase playing time.

He said: “We’re not in the business of handing out spots.”
