The St. Louis Cardinals, who are one of the MLB’s most storied franchises, failed to make the playoffs with a 78-84 record this campaign.
The franchise hasn’t made the postseason since 2022, and fans showed their frustrations this season as a result.
The Cardinals saw their Busch Stadium attendance drop by 628,108, the MLB’s largest decrease.
There would be plenty of empty seats at numerous Cardinals games, with social media users calling the scene “embarrassing.”
The decrease was larger than the Tampa Bay Rays and the A’s, both of whom moved into minor league stadiums.
During the press conference for the new president of baseball operations, Chaim Bloom, Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt Jr. responded to the attendance drop at Busch Stadium and said, “message received.”
The Cards’ attendance also had a record low for a single game at their home park.
St. Louis’s brutal returns come after a trend in which the organization had a top-five draw in baseball each year from 2013 to 2019.
The latest declines at the gates come after previously entering the playoffs nine times between 2011 and 2022.
“I understand [the fans’] frustration,” DeWitt said.
“They love their Cardinals.
“They love their Cardinals winning.
“We’re going to make every effort to get back to that.”
That effort is promoting Bloom, who had the same role with the Red Sox, and has been a Cardinals advisor for the last two years.

Bloom will take over for John Mozeliak, who is leaving the team after a 30-year run that included two World Series titles.
The Cardinals are playing in a difficult NL Central that features the Milwaukee Brewers, who had the best record in the MLB, and the Wild Card-winning Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds.
But St. Louis was in the bottom half in spending, with a 2025 luxury-tax payroll of $156.6 million, good for 19th in the league.
DeWitt doesn’t have a 2026 payroll number set yet for the team.
“We don’t know what our payroll is going to be,” DeWitt said about 2026.
“I can’t tell you right now, but we’re going to provide the resources for [Bloom] to build what he’s talking about building, and we can take it from there.”
